Wish I could believe that… but just think about it, the kids are dreaming of March Madness. And the gap between saying, "We aspire to be a MM team one day," and "We ARE a MM team" is as wide as the Grand Canyon (the actual canyon, not the team).
Until Cal gets to say the 2nd one, our recruiting stays at mid-tier at best.

I think the combination of being in the Bay Area and playing in the ACC with our ESPN sponsorship is very attractive for western, but even national recruits, as long as we are a winning team, which we now are.

Year 2 was disappointing and it seemed like we were treading water going into year 3. However, after beating UCLA I've raised my expectations. If we can get into the top half of the ACC, then maybe add a top transfer to the players returning, making the Tournament next year feels very doable.

If this year's team can put together a solid and surprising season there's no reason to believe that the recruiting can't get significantly better. It's been done before here, it can happen again.

Lol, i never disagree with you, but in season one:
he took a nobody and made him a number one pick.
In season two:
he took two good players and took them to higher heights and only left due to NIL.
Now its Season three:
And the team is now being built in which was impossible with the decimated Cal team he inherited. Instead he built characters and talents and thus got better characters and more talent until we have what we have today in only his third year.

Mark Madsen has impressed every year and now he's able to start building a team.

I'm a member of the "Church of Madsen" and since its Sunday I'm going to preach.

Here is the way I see it:

Agree about year 1: all new roster, #21 Portal class,13-19 (9-11, 8th place in the PAC-12). #121 in Ken Pom. NBA draft pick. A solid first effort, especially given where Mark Fox left the program. I was happy and optimistic even though everyone graduated. I had faith Madsen would grow from there.

Year 2: all new roster, #34 Portal class, including a star player from Stanford, 14-19 (6-14, 15th place in the ACC). #110 in Ken Pom. Team lost 8 of the last 10 games and the two best players with eligibility remaining left. It did not feel better than year 1, it felt worse. Team did not look well coached. Recruiting class was not spectacular. I was having serious doubts, I had lost my faith, but hoped it was an anomaly and still had hope.

Year 3: all new roster,#53 Portal class, some good transfers, but no standouts. Felt like we were treading water at best and my expectations were for another sub .500 season. Then…. 6-1 with a win over #18 UCLA. #65 in Ken Pom. Moreover, the team LOOKS great, good team ball, great guard play, hits the three. Good fundamentals. Mixing in zone. Team looks well coached. I am now thinking this could be a tough team in the ACC, with a shot at the postseason, but over .500 for sure. And players will be coming back next year. Plus Greg says we already have good recruiting momentum? I am now over the moon. And will be back in the church of Madsen in the next pew over singing "Hallelujah!"

Besides being more synchronized as a team, we finally have multiple guys who can hit the three consistently.
