Does ESPN set the start times for the basketball games, as it does with the football games? If so, is that why tonight's game is starting at 5p instead of 7p or 7:30p?

Cal's giving up a little bit of an advantage by having an earlier tipoff, IMHO. A game that starts at 7p would last until about 9p, which would be midnight in Atlanta. The Yellowjackets would likely feel just a bit more drained and tired than Cal players by the end of the game as a result.

Not to mention, I'm sure there are fans who won't be able to make the 5 PM tip-off.

I think part of the reason is that Furd-Clemson is right after our game tonight, 7pm PST tipoff.

It likrly wasn't going to be a high attendance game anyway

The answer to all of these questions is always $$$.

Whatever time slot gives the conference a bigger TV contract is the time slot the game will be played.

The 5:00 pm start time really screwed up parking. My assigned lot was filled to overflowing. People were double parking. Day parkers are going to be surprised when they can't get out.
