Potential for 3 Postseason games at Haas

Am I right in assuming that if Cal gets a No. 1 seed in the NIT, there will be three games played at Haas between March 17 and 25? The higher seed hosts the first three rounds unless there's a scheduling conflict.
3 more games would be a nice silver lining to not making the Dance. What are the odds we get a No. 1?
And how easy will it be for season ticket holders to go?
A terrible thought just occurred… could we have a 2017 NIT situation where we are missing a bunch of players because they are saving themselves for the portal? Look up the loss to UC-Bakersfield if you don't know what I'm talking about.

Today's loss puts us out of the Madness, but what seed are we going to get in the NIT. No. 1 seems unlikely (meaning maybe only one or two games hosted at Haas) but are we thinking 2 or 3? We were 74th on KenPom before the loss to FSU but I expect that to drop.

Looks like Ken Pom is updated and we are now #72 with Florida State now #64

Based on your post, it looks like if Cal's a 2 or a 3 seed, and with enough breaks in its favor, Cal could still end up hosting all three home games.

I would really like to see Cal win the NIT. It did that during the Ben Braun era when I was a student. While it was nothing like winning March Madness, it was still a really good consolation prize. TBH, it's probably better to win the NIT than it is to get bounced out of the first weekend of the Tourney. At least with a NIT championship, there's a celebration of being the best of the rest and ending the season with a win. Whereas, getting bounced during the first weekend in the Tournament just leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth with another loss.

Of course, losing in the NIT also sucks. I'm not sure if it sucks more to lose in the NIT or in the Dance. Thanks to Ben Braun and Mike Montgomery, I got to experience Cal do both as a Cal fan. Hopefully, Madsen won't repeat history with another NIT loss, but will, instead, make history with a NIT win.

What I dislike about now versus the past is that in the past, if you went to the NIT, you usually became excited about the next year as with an extra year of development and gelling, the team can reasonably expect to be a tourney team.

Now it is tough and Cal is in a tough place. They have pieces (e.g. Pippen, Dort, Ames) but if one transfers, do the others bail ship too? Im sure that they have a great relationship with Madsen but more sure that they don't want to leave college never having played in the tourney. So if say Ames goes, does Pippen leave simply because the talent on the team just got worse.

Unrelated to the above ... What happened to Scottie? He has been absent for quite some time although I cant say I watjed the past couple games in their entirety.
Give to Cal Legends!

https://calegends.com/donation/ Do it now. Text every Cal fan you know, give them the link, tell them how much you gave, and ask them to text every Cal fan they know and do the same.

Yup. I am not sure what you do. I guess you talk to the team and find out what they want.

I think some guys might sit (see Heisman boy). You might see some minutes for Dut Dut. And we are going to probably disappoint fans because under the new rules you get conference champs that coughed it in their tournie and in all likelihood those ARE teams that are senior ladden that have been playing together for years. I expect an L and lots of casuals going off on the bears because of that.

It def sucks more to lose in the Dance. I also would prefer a first round exit to an NIT win. You're just not really competing for anything and I'm not sure I can get behind it. I would go to the games because I like the players but the NIT isn't for anything it is just more games still fun to watch but just not much at stake. I am honestly surprised we hang an NIT championship banner lol.

The NCAA transfer portal was introduced for all sports, including men's and women's basketball, on October 15, 2018. I believe it was more a case that our coach had taken another job, so he was not interested in sticking around Cal. I would go to any NIT games at Cal unless it's a team I have never heard of like some of our early season games.

Think of the NIT as the equivalent of the non-playoff bowl games for football. It's a chance to see your team play in the postseason, even if it's not in the glamorous postseason tournament.

Yeah that is the comparison I have been thinking of in my head. Yeah I like it for seeing the team just not that excited for the stakes. But everyone just tune in on Sunday. We have a greater than 0 chance of being called, maybe we catch a break for once.

But it's time to let it go man.

I like it. At least there is a reason to watch and agonize on the commercial breaks will Cal have to go to usf? Will Cal go to Maples? Will Cal ato make tickets reasonable? Will they let season ticket holders keep their seats? Will we have to play Florida State again? The uncertainty of College basketball just got worse.

That is correct.

Cal lost to Bakersfield in the NIT on the evening of March 14, 2017. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/recap?gameId=400946458

Missouri announced Cuonzo Martin as their new head basketball coach on March 15, 2017. https://mutigers.com/news/2017/3/15/mens-basketball-martin

I did not mean it literally, so this exercise in portal dates was unnecessary.
For the literalists out there, I meant that players saving themselves for their own career prospects - in 2017 it was Jabari Bird and Ivan Rabb looking at the NBA, the injury excuse was clearly a fig leaf - will put the postseason games in jeopardy.
Whether it is the NBA calling or the portal, I'm saying postseason play that's not March Madness always carries this risk now.

Bell and.Camden are t going anywhere. Out of eligibility. We will have enough to play.ames staying. If Pippen and Dort leave we play Illic and Carr or Dorsey. We are not giving up the first post season in years.

I guess we'll find out if the fear of injury for departing seniors (who can make money internationally) and portal gamblers trumps not wanting to disappoint Madsen. I hope you're right.

This page is not correct about the selection process for the NIT.

The correct process is explained on this page: https://www.ncaa.org/sports/2026/2/5/ncaa-mens-basketball-tournament-selections.aspx#NIT

Even using the NIT's actual criteria, though, Cal would not be likely to get a NIT home game. Two ACC teams will get NIT home games. Cal is probably not going to be one of the top two non-NCAA-tournament teams in the ACC based on the composite of computer rankings that is listed at the link above.

Tomorrow will tell us a lot about the uncertainty that now surrounds our MBB program. Will we accept a NIT bid? Will some players opt not to play post season, favoring the portal or just not wanting to risk injury? Will Madsen be our coach in any post season games?

The recent losses to Pitt at Haas and Wake and FSU on the road have characterized us as not ready for prime time. A 5 NIT seed seems a bit harsh but not too far from the reality of how we are perceived nationally.

If the NIT offers an opening away game at Furd USF or elsewhere, do we accept or punt? I do not see us getting a home game for the reason stated in the previous post.
barsad
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Good info BearSD, these rules make my head spin. I guess a mid-tier seed is a real possibility, though if 6 ACC teams get Madness bids we're looking at NC St, FSU and the Furd ahead of us in line (on KenPom, we're further back on NET). As usual a lot of unpredictability in the system, almost not worth following until the lists are published.

Yes.
It would be totally out of character for him to just wave goodbye after committing so much verbal and personal time capital into this program.
That said, I have no idea how far schools will go to poach…. I'm assuming pretty damn far.
If he leaves I will travel to away games at random cities just to boo him,

Both… he's going to leave at some point, of course, we don't have Coach K's here (Coach M?), but anything earlier than the 2028 season would be not giving this his full effort.

Indeed. But Sebasta said some time ago that there's no chance we would turn down an NIT bid. Of course that was before yesterday's uh-oh news about Madsen. But, hmmm, haven't heard from Sebasta since before yesterday's news broke.
