Money talks. Time to build that generational wealth.

From the back stories about him, I would never want him as my head coach.

He seems like polar opposite of MadDog.

yea, it sounds like there was a mtg w/ the players this morning.

always respected what he was able to accomplish at SMC and will be interesting to see if he can build something at ASU.

WCC takes a huge blow. Big opportunity for SCU and USF

Confirmed:

No mention of money.

Poor hire, IMO. He's a good coach and has had a great career. He has also been at Saint Mary's for over 25 years, has never shown interest in leaving, and is 63. He's clearly taking a retirement package. Not the recipe for success.

Great deal for him. He'll make a lot more money win or lose and be done within 5 years either because he succeeded and went out on his own terms or he crashed and burned and got a buyout.

It will be very difficult for WCC teams to get into the NCAA tournament at large from now on. Their strength of schedule will be hit hard. In men's hoops the WCC is replacing Gonzaga (this season's NET 7) by adding Denver (NET 241) next season and UC San Diego (NET 124) in 2027-28.

Yeah, Bennett was great at St. Mary's, but... Surprised ASU is making this hire, especially as they already tried Herb Sendek. In fact, has anybody ever seen Bennett and Sendek in the same room?

This move sort of reminds me of when Monty left Furd to coach the Warriors: massive payday and maybe a chance to reach success at a higher level. I suppose a good coach is always wondering how things might be at the next level up.

Yes, it is either Randy or Herb that is the other's evil twin brother. Bronco fans thought Herb was leaving for Providence but they hired Brian Hodgson

Monty picked up $10M for his retirement nest egg from the Warriors.

yea that's a fair point.

The thinking was that most years it was a 2-bid league and basically always the Zags + SMC.

Now you don't have to deal with those two giants.

League should probably look into adding Cal Baptist. Seems to fit the conference profile and investing in sports.

ASU is not an easy job in a pretty stacked Big-12 but Randy Bennett is from the area (Mesa), has been a consistent winner, and has familiarity with Tommy Lloyd who was a longtime Gonzaga assistant before taking the Zona job

this is a similar move for Wittingham in Utah to move to Michigan right when he's about to retire.

Competitive people are competitive, they want to go out on their own terms, with a team that promises a lot of resources. Its finals 4/championship or bust and they they both move on after this

He would've been a very good hire in the pre-NIL era. Kind of in the Monty mold.

But I definitely wouldn't want him in the NIL era. Seems like a low upside choice at the P4 level.

maybe but when his name was floated around pre-NIL I still didn't want him at Cal

don't like his old-school coaching style ... have never liked it

the only thing I liked was his international recruiting and wish we had someone on staff who specializes it that

Randy will probably get a $2M annual raise at ASU vs SMC. If he gets a 5 year contract that will be a $10M+ retirement nest egg.

From a Mr. AI Googles:

" Randy Bennett agreed to a five-year contract to become the Arizona State University (ASU) men's basketball head coach, starting in the 2026-27 season. The deal is reported to be worth over $3 million annually in its first year, marking a significant increase over his previous compensation at Saint Mary's"

And AI don lie.

Looks like their PG (Mikey Lewis from Oakland) and PF (Mauraskaus (sp??) from Lithuania) have entered the portal.

Not sure if we need another guard but their PF looked decent.

Again, there's a 0% chance we can afford Mauraskas. He'll be one of the most sought after players in the portal.

Mikey Lewis will also be expensive. Hope we can just keep Pippen and/or Ames instead of having to venture into the open market for our backcourt.

All true, but it's always an open market and our guys won't be cheap either.

Has anyone mentioned in this thread that a Randy Bennett has a son who was great friends with Aiden Mahaney?
I recall the young Bennett was on the roster when Mahaney soared as a freshman. They both had gone to Campolindo, right?

Well, I checked to see what happened to Mahaney, he was scooped up by UConn, but didn't do well and went to a third school.

So that all tells me that Bennett Junior must have completed his time by now in moraga - both k-12 and at SMC with dad.

Who wants to bet that Junior will be on the ASU staff as video coordinator or something?

I haven't researched this, just read the news here.
But this move tells me - oh! Bennett stuck around for his family, and now will finally play the game.

Good for him.

Okay, here's the scoop:

Quote:

Cade Bennett is the son of long-time Saint Mary's basketball coach Randy Bennett and Darlene Bennett. Cade is a former guard for the Saint Mary's Gaels, having attended Campolindo High School and played for his father's team starting in the 2023-24 season. Randy Bennett has two sons, Chase and Cade.

Key Details About Cade Bennett:Role: Redshirt junior guard for Saint Mary's Gaels.

Background: Played high school basketball at Campolindo High School in Moraga, California.Debut: Made his college debut in November 2023.

Stats: Averaged 10.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game during his senior year at Campolindo.

Note: Randy Bennett also has an older son named Chase.

I guess I'm off on my years. And he still has eligibility. Will Cade stay at SMC? Will he forgo eligibility? Will he walk on with dad at ASU? We shall see. Maybe he's graduated in his 4th year and will join the working world.
