Fantastic! I am glad we did not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. This makes so much sense. Thanks to the Goldmans for your generous support. Go Bears!

Wasn't this sort of thing more or less what was suggested by many, years ago? This idea was pushed aside for the MUCH more ambitious addition to the north side of Haas. I assume that my donation to the Con Dome will be used here, or did it also take the midnight flight to Missouri "

How long will it take to complete?

I think this is great news regard a practice facility. I was at Cal before Hass was our renamed facility. I have only one question. dId THE ACQUISITION include both the Blue and Gold courts or just the Blue court leaving Gold in RSF hands. Really happy for the Athletes.

Just the Blue.

Any truth to the rumor that there will also be a Shocky1 School for Yoga Studies at this new practice facility

Is the actual court going to be regulation sized? The rendering shows a court that is not close to regulation length.

Hmmm. Wonder if this means Jay & Jenny's days are numbered officially?

I think that's fine. The right balance between the BB programs and students

Practices can easily scheduled with only the MBB and WBB sharing vs today which is shared with students, intramurals and classes/events

The best part is it will be open 7/24 for players to get shots up, individual work outs, and to work on their craft

I'm out of the loop on this and I'm not sure I understand what is happening. It sounds like an EXISTING RSF court is going to be "re-allocated" and enhanced for both basketball programs. Is that right? How does the loss of the court for the general students work? This sounds way better than removing Spieker pool and putting an all new basketball facility there. How was the original RSF Blue court funded and are there outstanding issues with its conversion to basketball only use? Is another court being created somewhere else?

I dont think the students need that many courts. There were also basketball courts upstairs on the third floor if i recall.

Many other intramurals share the basketball courts, like badminton, indoor soccer etc. It prob makes the schedule a bit tighter for the students but nothing insurmountable.

Plus if they really want they can easily put some outdoor courts on campus somewhere else

Better than nothing, and much thanks to the Goldmans.

But this is hardly a selling point for recruits. In the long run, a competitive program needs a quality practice facility, and this is not it.

I disagree. Yes, it is not as nice as many P4 practice facilities, but the lack of a dedicated practice facility won't hurt us like it has

Better yet, having it 7/24 for players to put up shots, train, and skills work will absolutely help the players improve

One of the biggest frustrations of a hooper is not having a court to access and I'm not talking about an outdoor court in the park

As for the RSF, there are 4 full courts in the main gym on the first floor, although the last court is usually setup for badminton, and sometimes it's used for events or other activities (e.g. VB tournament or intramurals), and the Gold gym next to the Blue gym on the 3rd floor (same size, and has one full length full court, but usually run two sideways full court games)

Was the Gold Gym purchased too by the athletic department? BG, said that both courts were purchased one each for the Men's and Woman's team. It seems by reading the article there is only the purchase of the Blue Gym and it will be shared by both teams. Maybe I'm misreading it? I just wanted to clarifify this. This is huge for Cal and I believe like you HoopsDreams this is a plus for our Men and Woman teams.

Is this rendering accurate? The court looks quite short.

In this image the distance from the 3-point line to the half-court line looks short.

This meets the requirement. Any additional money is far better spent on NIL.

Am I missing something?
That's $10 million to renovate a basketball gym that's already a basketball gym. The only changes is the name and the paint on the floors and walls with a few extras?. This sounds like a United States Defense Department project that's funneling money to N.I.L.

From what I've read here I think that $10M includes purchasing the facility from whatever department owns RSF.

How do you know that this won't be a quality practice facility? The remodeling/reconstruction hasn't even begun yet. Wait until it is finished and in operation before criticizing it.

Agreed. It feels like an important cost effective solution.

Long term - it feels like with the removal of the Clark Kerr restrictions Cal can do "big things" like a dedicated practice facility for its D1 athletes - a use FAR cheaper to build as part of a master planned complex around student life.
