FIFA ticketing clster****, they have priced tickets in the mid-3 figures for Saudi Arabia-Cape Verde in Houston and are now starting to gradually discount them. My guess is that they have only sold a quarter of the seats at NRG Stadium (cap. 72k).

FIFA pricing $1000- 2800 per seat

Seat Geek, $900- $2500.

Still seems rich for an opener.

TV, free

No interest in playing this gouging game FIFA has going on. Their corruption would make even the Democratic Party blush.

I'm talking about any and all games, including and up to when the US gets its ass kicked in the first game of the round of 16

I scalped 2 tix for USA-Brazil WC94 QF at Furd for not much over $100 each. The lady who sold them could have gotten a bit more but she was a friendly well-off visitor from Camerou. Still those tickets wouldn't have sold for that much more back then.

Maybe Curacao won't be a pushover after all, pound for pound the Dutch, along with the Croatians and Portuguese are the best footballing nations in Europe...

Translated from Spanish
Shall we talk about how Holland invented a country just so they could take their backup national team to the World Cup?

Interesting graph illustrating the phenomenon of "northern" 2nd or even 3rd generation immigrants born in the West who will play for the country of their roots. Zidane's son Luca for instance is on the Algerian team. One of the things that makes the Moroccan team such a dangerous darkhorse is that all their players come from France, Spain, Holland and Belgium, countries with top soccer culture, with many of their players that could have made these countries' rosters.

More fun in a bar than in person? Not even close. Soccer is a great live sport. You need to be able to watch all the players at the same time, just like in American football. Plus the live crowds cheers are heard rather than the weird bar cheers that I can't quite figure out what they mean. I guess they signal other bar patrons, but I can't engage in them.

Wait until they start showing empty stadiums. That will be your cluster dump.

He meant, it's more fun to get all the beer he can drink for the price of parking at the stadium - not to mention ticket prices.
Plus, he can then stagger home and not worry about it.

This edition of the WC where 2.67 teams advance out of groups of 4 means that one win should get you through. Teams that win their first two games will field mostly or all subs as starters, those with a win and a tie also won't go all out. Matchday 3 is going to be mostly boring, whereas in the old format it was often a frantic 2-way fight among the bottom 2-3 teams in the group.

And with this format, in many day 3 matchups you will get situations where both teams advance with a tie and teams with a wink and a nod going through the motions almost as bad as the infamous 1982 "anschluss" game between West Germany and Austria where they both qualified with a 1-1 tie and passed the ball around in the most boring WC game of all time.

BTW the draw for the US is favorable here, we get Turkey on the last game, that might be a situation where both teams advance with a draw. Australia is the must win game on paper.

I am with you on the sunscreen. I drink cider at bars so we will disagree about the rest. But the more fans, the better.

My friend and I invited our whole soccer league to a bar for the Champions League final and like 100 showed up. It was cool to fill up a bar, but I certainly wish I was at the game.

You'd think I woulda become a soccer fan w/o needing sluggo and concordtom's help and encouragement:

I was in a pub in Munich when Germany won the WC finals in 1990. The Krauts made us feel welcome. My buddy was Mexican-American and they said he looked like Maradona and so they made him sign autographs for everybody as such. When Germany scored, they all took their giant mugs of beer and threw the beer straight up onto the ceiling, so we had to do it, too. Out on the street after the game, it was mass humanity and kept getting more and more crowded for at least an hour. I remember remarking that there was a 10-20% chance that we would be crushed. 50/50 that we would be trampled if we lost our footing and fell down.

Good times.

Decent angle but I disagree that all game 3 games will be boring. Teams want to play the 3rd place team rather than be the 3rd place team.
Also, they may wish to face Spain or ? In the final rather than be placed in their side of the bracket. That is to say, pick your opponent in next round.

But yes, there could be some duds.

What this thread needs is some pre tournament content from other nations about their teams.

What drama exists in (London) about the (three lions)?
Who has a nagging injury?
Which forwards are in a battle to start?
Which player does coach favor?

Anyone??

The USA squad is only a small part of the story.

How about our neighboring hosts?
Cal88
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Norway and Morocco are dark horse teams.

Brazil might be back again, usually do well in tournaments on the western hemisphere (except for that one big failure at home) and have solid coaching with Ancelotti.

Spain is the favorite, play well as a team, Yamal now top player in the world.

France among top favorites, but some gaps on midfield and potential leadership issues with Mbappe' and his prima donna tendencies being the captain. The game against a good Norway side in group play will be a bellwether as to how deep they will go in the bracket.

Argentina in the mix, reloading. Not sure about traditional powers Germany and Holland, because I haven't followed them closely lately. England has a decent team but a decades record of choking.

Quote:

How about our neighboring hosts?

Top Canadian player, Bayern's Alphonso Davies is out for their opener against Bosnia with a hamstring injury but expected to play in the 2nd or 3rd game against Qatar and Switzerland. Tight/evenly matched group.

Not sure about Mexico, maybe Sluggo can fill us in. They have Korea, S Africa and the Czechs in their group.

I admit that I don't watch qualifying because I have to go outside occasionally (to play soccer). With that being said:
1. This is the least talented Brazilian team I have ever seen unless Neymar can somehow turn back the clock. They were underachieving for some time even when they had better players. But they do have Vini Jr., one of the best players in the world, and a good keeper. Also the heat should favor South American and Asian teams rather than European teams.
2. The two teams no one talks about that I would watch out for are Germany and Japan. Germany is top 10 in talent, although their depth is not what it once was, and I still think Neuer is a great keeper, even at 40. Japan always plays tough and disciplined and go out in a heartbreaking way. Maybe this year will be different.
3. I think Morocco was fluky last time. Noway has Haaland and Odegaard but they don't have much (any?) history of success.
4. Spain is the favorite. If you have never seen Yamal play, you are in for a treat. He is only 18 but up there with Maradona, Messi and Christiano Ronaldo as the best players I have ever seen. I think they should move him to the middle so he can't be double teamed out of the game. They did unfortunately lose Fermin Lopes, a great attacking midfielder, and they don't have a great stirker. France is favorite for runner up. They lost Saliba, one of the world's best center backs, but if anyone can replace him, they can. They want an open game like PSG.
5. Argentina is running it back. Messi has been playing well in MLS. I don't know how that will translate. They always play with an edge.
6. Portugal is top 5 in talent. Forget Christiano, they are better if he does not play. England overlooked Cole Palmer, which is insane, but their German coach Tuchel should be an upgrade over anyone they have had in the past. These two teams are looking at the semifinals.
7. Mexico is okay. Raul Jimenez, their star striker, is back after not playing well for multiple years after suffering a serious concussion. He is surrounded by good players but no one else great, and they usually get knocked out early by a more talented team. Their keeper is 40 and was not that great when he was younger. They do have a lot of crowd support. Canada's Davies can't seem to stay healthy and their coach, Jesse Marsch, is weird. They are better than they have traditionally been but I don't expect much from them.

This behavior on both sides is totally standard by every team now. An offensive player grabs the ball during the chaos period when the defensive team is giving the offensive team the business. When the ref clears out the defensive team the ball holder gives the ball to someone else who takes the penalty. You can hate Arsenal for other reasons, but not for this.
