> Someone you don't know calls, emails, or texts you offering free medical equipment or services. What should you do? Hang up. Delete it. Only you and your doctor should decide what care and services are right for you.
Scammers want your Medicare information so they can bill Medicare for services you don't need like hospice (end-of-life care), home health care, or durable medical equipment (like a brace or cane).
Hospice scams are particularly harmful. If a scammer signs you up for hospice care without your knowledge, you could lose access to your regular Medicare benefits.

> Crush Fraud..
Remember: Never give out your Medicare Number and don't sign anything for free services it's a scam. If you think you may have experienced fraud, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or report it online at
medicare.gov/fraud.

>Sincerely,
The Medicare Team
NOTE: To root out fraud, Medicare has temporarily stopped allowing new home health and hospice agencies from opening. This doesn't affect your care. If you and your doctor decide you need home health or hospice services, you can still get them from existing agencies in your area.

If I have time on my hands, I'll play along with these jerks, if only to prevent them from trying to scam someone else.

Conversation goes something like this

Scammer: You have a free benefit from Medicare. It won't cost you anything

Me: Who authorized this?

S: Medicare

M: Medicare doesn't authorize anything. It has to be a physician, physician assistant or nurse practioner. And why isn't this going to cost me anything. Who's paying the coinsurance?

S: It's a special deal authorized my Medicare that waives the coinsurance.

M. Medicare doesn't do that. And I told you, Medicare doesn't authorize benefits.

S. You don't know what you're talking about.

M: Really? I'm a retired hospital CFO so I think I do know what I'm talking about. I'm not going to give you my Medicare information, so you might as well hang up

S. F you and hangs up

I have often thought of doing the same but…..

Aggravating a telephone scammer is risky because it signals that your number is active, which can lead to an immediate spike in spam calls. You may also be targeted for identity theft, subjected to malicious robocalls, or even face threats and harassment as retaliation.

*I used to have fantasies about writing a story about hunting down scammers and then…..some b@stard beat me to it:

……and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have no clue how they got me other than I've heard all our Socials and Medicare info is for sale on the Dark Web due to the numerous data leaks over the years.

I still DO have an ongoing fantasy about wiping out one particular scammer. I bet you can guess his name.
