Ultimately, I didn't vote for Steyer as I just didn't like a total outsider coming and trying to buy his way in.
That said, I don't think I agreed with one of the major criticisms of him ("He says he's against billionaires?!? He is one himself! I don't trust him!"), I thought he was being sincere with his pseudo-progressive views... but I just didn't vote for him.

I think the outsider buying his way doesn't stick either. I think spending his own money is preferable to being bought and compromised by Facebook, Chevron and Google money like Becerra. His ads, though, were bad and borderline creepy.
totally. When in CA his really bad ads were plastered all over the tv and I thought "oh here we go again with some fringe rich guy". I look up after a few months of not paying attention and boom he's a front runner.DiabloWags said:Anarchistbear said:Big C said:

Agreed 100%
He spent his own money.
And in the beginning, his ads were on every 5 minutes from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm on KPIX that it was annoying. Never mind how bad they were. That "Tom's my Guy"" guy was creepy.
I couldn't believe how bad his ads were.

Dude's a very smart guy.
He made a lot of money investing in distressed debt when running Farallon Capital.
But I couldn't get over how bad his commercials were.
Creepy.
And they were so repetitive they became nauseating and I tuned them out within 3 seconds.
Couldnt believe how such a smart guy could be so dumb . . . thinking these ads were compelling.

So you tune someone out when they say the same thing over and over again.
Interesting.

I agree with that, too. Better his own money than to be beholden. The reason that was a key factor that caused me to look elsewhere was that it just pissed me off that he could do it. Okay, I might be jealous.
And yes, the ads were ineffective.
While I consider myself fairly politically astute, I'd say at least a third of the time my reason for casting a vote is that the other candidate did something that pissed me off, or I just didn't like the cut of his jib.
Quote:
I ended up voting for Katie Porter. It took me a while to get past the fact that she's homely (I would only admit that on an anonymous message board, but c'mon) and I then I zipped right past the criticisms that she was a b****, By late May, I saw a candidate that seemed somewhat better than all the other mediocre candidates.
Becerra will be decent, though I'm not expecting any big things from him. Hopefully, he's pro-Cal

Sadly, this is often the best we can do in our broken political system.Quote:

I came to the same calculus. I knew she wouldn't win, but for all the legitimate criticisms of her, she had two things going for her.
1. She would actually govern the state instead of running for President for 8 years and letting it go to hell as Newsom has done.
2. She would actually try to make things better, even if they weren't 100% the things I would want her to do.
Becerra will be as useless as all California Democrats are and will probably waste his time picking fights with Trump instead of addressing California's actual problems.
On a happier note, for the first time in forever, someone I voted for (state election) actually looks like they're going to win.

If Swalwell wasn't ousted, it may have been him and Becerra as the two candidates?

We were denied a Swalwell vs. Hilton fight for California.
