The California women's basketball team has added sophomore transfer Carly Amborn to its roster for the 2026-27 season, Cal head coach Charmin Smith announced Thursday.

Amborn, a 6-foot-2 guard from Larkspur, California, is transferring to Cal from Stanford.

“Carly brings tremendous size to the guard position,” Smith said. “With her length not only will she be a matchup problem for opposing backcourts, she will also give us versatility on defense to guard multiple positions. I’ve been following her since high school and she is a lights out 3-point shooter so she will be a great compliment to our existing 3-point threats and fits our style of play extremely well.”

As a freshman in 2025-26, Amborn appeared in 16 games logging 59 minutes and averaging 2.0 points per game and also shot over 50% from beyond the arc. She posted season highs of 10 points, four rebounds and two 3-pointers against Lehigh.

Prior to Stanford, Amborn was a four-star recruit out of San Domenico School where she was twice named to the San Francisco Chronicle Girls All-Metro Basketball First Team (2024-25) and was a two-time Bay Counties League (BCL) West Player of the Year (2024-25). She led San Domenico to its first North Coast Section (NCS) Division V crown in 2024 after posting 27 points and 15 rebounds in the championship game. Amborn was also a participant in trials for both the 2024 USA Women’s U17 National Team and 2023 USA Women's U16 National Team.

“I cannot wait to continue my family legacy here,” Amborn said. “Cal truly feels like home. Coach Charmin is the ultimate leader and I am incredibly excited to play for someone who cares so deeply and believes in her players on and off the court. I feel so lucky to join this team.”

Reading her bio on Stanford athletics…her mother, Pam Nelson was a 3 time All-American tennis player at Cal, and was on the pro tennis circuit. Has 3 brothers…her older brother is named…Cal, a USF pitcher

Her mom, Pam, was a great tennis player, but played only two years because of a training dispute with Cal coach Jan Brogan.

As a redhead myself, I heard this so much I almost brought a portable razor to the big game my senior year planning to shave my head if that chant started.

It's good to be red hot or well read but try to avoid red tape or red ink. Then there's this:

An actual prejudice against redheads still exists in the UK and apparently parts of the USA as well. I think red hair is beautiful.

(According to a recent piece in the Guardian: People with red hair who have put up with teasing or "fiery" stereotypes may be pleased to learn that they appear to be winners from an evolutionary perspective. A large genetics study has revealed that, in Europe, the gene for red hair has been actively selected for more than 10,000 years.)

My sister stayed 2 years in Cloyne Court on the same street. At the time (1968-1970) that place was pretty rough. Around the same time I started out in the Unit 2 dorms, then a few different apartments on Warring St and College Ave. Interesting times.

Wish I had long hair. Wish I had red hair. Wish I had any hair.

one summer far faar ago, in the early 70s, met the love of my life at Cloyne's weekly Snack Night.
rough? darned heck no, wildest thing was a nearly blind guy playing chess (badly)
prior to that shared an apartment on Warring, with 3 other newbies, across the street from a frat

She was a neighbor of ours in Marin and I would always see her mom wear a Cal hat and we would talk bears…

Great family and so glad she made her way home…
