Is there a better way (or ANY way) to market to incoming Freshmen. There have been on-site Athletic Ticket Office folks at each dorm selling season passes. Are we not at a point where we can't just GIVE the students football (and basketball) tickets?

My son got in! I didn't realize I'd be so emotional. I wasn't with the other schools he got into, but something about him following a similar path to mine.

Congrats! This is a big deal...I have a nephew who is extremely sharp, does track, has a 4.2+ GPA and he has not gotten into UC Davis, UCSB, UCLA, UCSD. It is so much harder to get into UCs then when I when to Cal in the early 90s.

Hope you guys celebrate tonight!
Give to Cal Legends!

https://calegends.com/donation/ Do it now. Text every Cal fan you know, give them the link, tell them how much you gave, and ask them to text every Cal fan they know and do the same.

Congrats!!!! Being a Cal parent is so much fun. It is also eyeopening as to the differences between how they experience it today and how that has changed.

Well, they do have that guaranteed admission programif you're from California, attend a junior college, and maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, you're guaranteed admission to a UC school.
If the goal is simply to get him into California, he could apply to a less competitive major like sociology, then switch majors later or pursue an individual major. With the right strategy, he could get into a UC School, Possibly even Cal.
It's clear he didn't have someone else take his SAT like some students reportedly do coming out of LA. He likely took the test himself. Unfortunately, in today's environment, it can feel like cheating wins but in this case, he played it straight and paid the price.
And people don't be fooled, the majority of Cal freshmen are always from Southern California. Don't believe ? Have your kid boo the Dogers on campus.

It's been awhile since UCs even accepted SATs, no less counted them towards admission.

(Hopefully they will change back and use them as just one metric, at some point.)

Back in the day that transfer agreement worked for every UC except Cal and UCLA, not sure currently

I think most JCs have tags (transfer agreements) with a couple of UCs. DVC was Davis & Santa Cruz. UCLA & Cal do not participate.

More current information here: https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/_files/documents/uc-tag-matrix.pdf

Summary - San Diego is also excluded and it seems you can go from any JC to the other 6.

UCLA had something with some community colleges, including Santa Monica College.

UC Berkeley used to have something called the Cooperative Admission Program. There were some freshman applicants that UC Berkeley wanted, but were rejected for fall admission. And so those were offered spring admission. And if they didn't get that, they were offered CAP. Basically, you had to go to one of like 10 high quality community colleges (DVC and Santa Monica College were among them). And if you got a certain GPA, you got guaranteed admission as a transfer student

They did. My son got in through CAP. It was his only college plan. Apply to Cal, either get in or use CAP to get in later. Worked great for him, but I expect it became too popular. He graduated 20 years ago. If memory serves, the program ended about that time.

The minimum GPA to transfer from a California JC to UC is 2.0 if a California resident, 2.4 if a non-resident.

https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/admission-requirements/transfer-requirements/preparing-to-transfer/basic-requirements.html

It is still the easiest and cheapest path to Cal, UCLA or UC San Diego degrees, but there is no GPA that is guaranteed.

For anyone whose kid really wants to go to Cal and didn't get in, an option that I recommend that has worked every time is to enroll at Berkeley City College on Center Street this summer. They can even live in the Berkeley Student COOP system (just need to be a student), live in one of the many student oriented high rise apartments along Shattuck, or to really save money, live at home and take BART in. Can even take a single course on the Cal campus every semester (at JC prices). Can attend Cal games and sit in the student section. If they are smart and actually go to class and do their reading and assignments they will do great.

My daughter also got in. No mention of the Spring Game on the Cal Day agenda though which apparently are both on April 18. Will be a fun day to be back on campus.

Absolutely. Potential 40-70 year customers (especially with potential exciting teams on deck). College football is like an addiction. Sort of like See's candy, who gives free samples without purchase. It sure seems like Marketing 101.
