This game may have killed our NCAA Tourney hopes. Very bad loss at home.

It's not a bad loss, what are you talking about? Clemson is a Top 20 team.

Yeah, but we got demolished at home. Clemson is barely in the top 25. Good team, but not great.

A stand up would call you a "rough audience."

Not really that bad in terms of making the NCAAs though.

Maybe you could argue that it portends bad play in the future, but we also got demolished by Louisville and then still got some good wins after that. Hard to say.

Reality check game for us. We have no answer for an aggressive defense that can disrupt our usual reliance on outside shooting.
This has not crushed our tourney chances, but I think we do need to win out in the regular season and go deep into the ACC tournament, a tall order.
Shake it off and get ready to destroy Syracuse and BC next week.

All we can do is hope for the best and that the team rebounds. We have to win the next two against Syracuse and Boston College.

I think Kocanas looked like he belonged out on the court today. And in the 2nd half, which we lost 38 to 35, our offense was working pretty well. Overall not a good day but I'm looking forward to getting Dort back and playing some teams which are not as good as Clemson.

Why do we think we're getting Dort back? Isn't there an equal chance he's out for the season and Madsen is just pretending every game?

I don't know anything about his injury but we do have 4 weeks remaining in the regular season.

This game was an opportunity to move into the predicted bracket in Lunardi but losing it does not change our "first out" position.

If Clemson finishes in the Top 30 in NET (this win may move them in) it will be a Quad 1 loss and treated the same as our home loss to Duke. Sure, we would all feel better if we played close and lost in OT but it would not really be that much difference.

However, we really need to win the rest of our games now to have anything more than a prayer.

Back from the Haas... totally expected that we would have a dud game like this at some point... especially with Dort out.... especially against a good team like Clemson. What's good is that we won the two previous games.

Seemed like a lot of our guys were playing hero ball this evening. Also we gave 'em great looks from beyond the arc.

Maybe we angered the Woofing Gods with all our talk about being in March Madness. But it still could happen!

Stay humble; stay thirsty.

IMO if we only take one more loss we probably make it. 2 more and we might need to win in the ACC Tourney.

Our upcoming road trip is huge. I think we need to go beat Syracuse and BC.

Traveling to the East Coast is always gonna be challenging. Beating Syracuse and BC (especially Syracuse) is not a given when Cal had already lost to FSU on the road.

Absolutely, but if we are going to play our way into the NCAA Tournament we need to win some difficult games.

Even if we get into the tournament the first team that we will play will be either as good as Clemson or better. That is almost a sure "one and done". In the past that has left a horrible taste in my mouth. Might it not be better to make a deep run in the NIT>

Any decent team with long quick guards will be able to handle our offense since we rely so much on three pointers. That is not a criticism of Madden but is the reality of the only offence that can produce points with the players we have. We need to recruit longer guards if that is possible.

Syracuse and Boston College (jeez) are not good teams and a half-decent March squad would not be worried about those games this season, but here we are

I think the "hero ball" you are referring to is due to the fact that Clemson completely disrupted our half court offense. At some point players get frustrated and start trying to do it on their own because they can feel that the offensive rotation plays just aren't working. Bottom line, with or without Lee, this team really lacks strength inside. Hopefully next year Yeaney is on the court, but MM really needs to get some "4" type players through the portal.

Mentioned on other site:

Earlier in the week, Cal reported that Lee Dort will be out for another couple weeks as he continues his recovery. A reasonable target for his return is the home game against Stanford on February 21st

Everyone knows we are not a real national contender right now. The key is to get a result this season that shows the program is advancing. Making the NCAAs would be such a result, regardless of how many games we win there.

Biggest thing about our team without Lee is we have no one that is capable of blocking shots. We need Lee back for defense and offense. He put 14 points on Duke.

Dut has 7 blocks in only 42 minutes played which suggests he is an even better shot blocker, though obviously Dort is better in every other category.

Bottom line is that Dort is our best all around big: offense and defense and is our best rebounder. We don't play as well without him and we need him if we are going to make a run for the Tournament.

The silver lining is that in Dort's absence our other bigs have shown a lot of improvement, especially Ilic, but even Kocanas was a positive last night though I'd still like to see Dut get more play. If/when we get Dort back we will have depth that we did not have at the beginning of the season. Hopefully it will not be too late.

What is the source for this, other than "Cal reported"? Given how opaque the staff has been on injuries (remember how we thought Rytis was coming back in a month?) I don't believe any date from anonymous sources.
