I know trotting out the stats can't change any minds when you're only making judgments based on emotion and how much you "like" a guy, but I'll try anyway.
Here's how Dort stacks up on important big-man stats compared to his peers.
Rebounds 98th
Blocks 278th
Points among Centers (he's not even listed as a C he's an F on ESPN): PPG - Among top 46 centers listed on ESPN (Dort is not listed as a C but an F) Dort's 8.6 is at 47th. Among all players he is No. 1379.
Assists: Not in Top 500
These are not the stats of an "amazing" player. Cal deserves a higher standard for "amazing."
He missed 7 games. That is why he is not among the national leaders. It would be an amazing accomplishment if he was.
Still, he leads Cal in offensive rebounding, defensive rebounding, total rebounding, blocks and FG%. He is far and away our best inside scorer and inside defender. He has the highest Defensive Box score on the team and the highest Win Share per 40 minutes on the team.
Sooo… even though the stats above are all per game, not totals, you're saying he would have outperformed so much in those 7 games compared to all of his other games that he would be among national leaders? Check them on ESPN yourself if you're skeptical, it's all there to be researched.
Leading his team on those stats when there's no one else available to compete with him doesn't count as excellence, it's about what can he achieve compared to other available talent.
