would he find playing time versus the new scholarship players that have signed with Cal? Is he a better PG or CG?

To my eyes Carr looks more like a PG. He's quick, can handle the ball, and had a great A/TO ratio but his shooting needs work and it's clear he has less length than anyone on our current roster.

I have no idea how he compares to Ruff or any of the new guards we've signed.

He is 100% a PG and would provide experienced depth at the position if he stays. He really needs to work on his shot, he doesn't need to shoot over people but a PG absolutely needs to be able to nail the 3 if left unguarded.

Does anyone have an update on TT? Does he have a new team or is he coming back to Cal? If he inked a new deal why has it not been announced?

I have also been wondering about this. I think Madsen used the last scholarship on a new freshman.247 portal still shoes him with no destination

Sounds like if Carr does not find a new home he likes before Fall, he could/would stay at Cal as a walkon (with NIL)? He is local and would only pay instate tuition. I'm sure we would find enough NIL to cover that at least.

NIL for a walkon? I hope that was a joke. We're not running a charity. The kid got bad advice, all he had to do was say he was coming back and he had a home at Cal and a Berkeley degree after basketball. This NIL era may be great for the top players, not so for mid and lower tier like TT.

No way Carr is lower tier. I think his timing was bad, when he entered the portal a lot of spots were already filled.

We need to figure a way to allow him to come back

3.8 PPG, 36% FG%, 25.7% 3pt% on 16.5 MPG over 32 games. That's not power conference quality production. He can handle the ball and doesn't make bad decisions (very good A/TO), but without significant improvement he's PG3 playing spot minutes. His value is his youth, but even then I think a lot of coaches have questions about his projectability. He's undersized, doesn't get dribble penetration, and his jumpshot does not look good.

NIL for a walk-on is like having an extra scholarship. Debatable, of course, if we want to do that.

There seems to be a pro-Carr camp and an anti-Carr camp. I'm in the former, though he obviously needs to improve his shooting

Over Carr's last 5 games he shot .500 on twos, .500 on threes, and .667 on free throws. Per 30 minutes played he averaged 8.5 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.2 turnovers. And passed the eye test. I think he turned the corner.

Yes, per game stats for most freshmen are not a good indicator of their ability. Per possession or per 40 minutes and shooting percentages are better, but TT's were not great. However, as pointed out above, he really improved on all counts his last 5 games, which were key games for Cal as it was ACC competition and we were trying to make the Tournament. That would lead one to conclude that he improved and the player he is now is not reflected in his full season stats. Moreover, he may continue to improve.

If Stanford has an opening, Smith should take him. If Madsen was willing to give him backup minutes last year he should again this year. As I said, he is already enrolled, he is a California resident, easy to make a virtual "scholarship" available for him. But if he wants more playing time, maybe transfer to another UC?

Yeah, hence me saying his value is his youth.

I count 15 players on Stanford's roster, and none of them are named Carr.

The poor kid was getting his mind in a mess with all the thoughts about what to do. He's so young and got pulled around like a puppet. These kids are so immature these days, and being asked to grow up too fast.

I think the worst mistake about the NIL is to continue to allow players to change schools without having to sit out a year. The way we are doing it now, with no penalty just invites chaos. The concepts of team are almost gone, both playing the game, and then quitting the team and the school you play for.

Kids (which is what they are) are missing out on playing several years together to bond better. Not only that, those who transfer (which is almost all of them) will lose out on getting a Cal degree. I got several of my early jobs simply because I had a degree from Cal. How do I know that? Because the people who hired me for those positions told me so. But that doesn't matter to these young players. In their mind, they are NBA bound, and almost NBA ready. And most will never get there. I quit Cal, for a different reason. A year later I came back, and I'm so glad I did.
