How the pads approached was probably instructive - rather than call the Chargers losers they reminded San Diegans that the Pads were now THE team that was in the community.

It can be more subtle, just allude to it. Something like "Long before the Raiders, before the Warriors, before the A's, Bears roamed the hills of the East Bay.
