Walker with the block - Lulu the ball and to the line! 9.4 to go and Lulu makes both 78-71!

And PALMS OF VICTORY!
Lulu came alive and carries the Bears to victory.

That's not to take away from the rest of the team - because defense kept Cal in this game despite giving up way way way too many offensive rebounds.

Difference in the game was Cal's 19 assists compared to Stanford's 8. Bears missed 8 free throws to the Cardinal's 1. Cal committed 19 TOs, mostly passes into Sakima Walker. Walker committed 7 turnovers while Sheppard triggered 5. Twidale generated 4 TOs although I'm not certain that they were entry passes to the post. Cardinal outrebounded the Bears, 44-36, allowing them 21 more shots in the game. Great victory!! GO BEARS!

california golden bears 78
stanford cardinals 71

cal women's basketball (12-9) is FUN, wildly entertaining and incomprehensible (why does the program's most efficient scorer naya ojukwu only play 10 minutes with 7 points??) with lulu "ponytail" twidale (berkeley grad/nfl baller nohl williams cbyf1/future wifey) going off for 24 points & the bears playing lockdown d in overtime for the VICTORY!!

let it fly, lulu, let it fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#

Because Stanfurd was much taller and Ojukwu was having difficulty against them. The two quick fouls in the first half sent her to the bench, plus she was bleeding. And going one on three was not smart against Stanfurd - she could get away with that against lesser teams.
She came back in the fourth quarter but just didn't have the height to defend or even to force Stan out of position or to take bad shots. Walker had the height and experience - how long did she play with 4 fouls?

I do think there is some physical issue with Ojukwu that limits her minutes but against Stanfurd, it was matchups.

That will go down as one of my favorite all time games at Haas. So many twists and turns. The Bears looked totally out of gas but they found something in reserve. You can't help but be proud of an effort like that and Lulu was a hero. Tremendous clutch performance. So happy for Charmin and the team. This could be a turning point in the season. Oh by the way...Go Bears!!!

I think Lulu has entered the Pantheon of "Battle of the Bay" heroes alongside AGL and Thomas.

This was a crazy game. The twist was we played really good defense when Furd was running their plays, but so often their offensive rebounding DESTROYED us. Gotta hope next year Charmin can bring in some big post players in addition to the two forwards coming in. Teams are all getting bigger, we have to keep up with them.

Yes, I thought we had emptied our tank with a few minutes left in regulation but somehow we found an extra gear. What a gritty win!

Good to see Claudia give us some minutes. Sakina couldn't have played 40 but she sure gave us some great interior defense when she was in.

Again too many unforced turnovers and more missed free throws than I'd like to see. I haven't seen the stats but it seemed like Stanford made all of their free throws.

Decent crowd, maybe 3000? But they were plenty loud.

ESPN says attendance was 4519.

Couldn't go because of illness...I'd have coughed us out of the gym...

Very nice win...yes, too many TOs...yes, too many missed FTs

BUT WHO CARES???

Beating Stanford in any way shape or form is GREAT!

So no nitpicking here!

Awesome!

Stats show Cal with 19 turnovers and Stanfurd with 17.
Cal with 18 points off turnovers and Stanfurd with only 13.

Stanfurd did make 13 of 14 Free Throws and Cal made 18 of 26 (69%). Stanfurd committed 24 fouls (but 3 were at the end to get Cal to the line) and Cal only committed 15 fouls

Livestats does not show the claimed attendance. (Edit Correction: under Notes, it shows 4519). it did sound like a good home crowd on the broadcast.

Note on Cal Defense:
Stan went from 4:50 left in the second to 5:03 in third without a made field goal.

Ok - I do have to give Stan credit for that last play to tie the game. Well executed. Damn them

Hate to say it but that was a good play. The post trails the guard who drives to the top of the key than stops and passes the ball back to the trailing post who's one of their best 3 point shooters. She also provides a nice screen. We should have just planted around the 3 point arc.

Thanks for pointing that out. And our 4 starters played 40-45 minutes. It should also be noted that Maul had as many rebounds as our 3 post put together.

chancellor lyons, cal wbb is a goldmine of opportunity with the wnba franchise across the bay drawing 18,000+ fans to games, when are you gonna throw the trash out & respect the swimmers and family members traumatized by this terrible human being??

Me and my now London-based Bears had the best time tonight. Charmin fist bumped us after the game, and honestly, in these horrific times, that felt like all we needed.

Go Bears. Swept the 'Furd this weekend!

Great Atmosphere with a big Straw Hat band turnout! The woman who is the MC for the Valkries Games(she always wears a hat) helped enlighten the fans. It was alumni day with many past players at mid court during half time including Layshia Clarendon and Stephanie Rivera. Charmin spoke to the crowd after the game, and from the court directed the band! It was awesome as she has a good relationship with the Straw Hatters, and appreciates the excitement they bring to the game! I could not be happier for the players to win this game! Of note: this is the second game in which a sophomore male Math Major sat next to me in the bleachers. I ask them what their major is, and when they quietly reply "Math", I respond by saying, "You are a Brainiac". They are so humble. GO BEARS!

Ojukwu called for a flagrant - which the commentators disagree with - and Ojukwu herself is bleeding from the contact.
Meanwhile, the difference is Furd's three point shooting.

Debbie Antonelli(my favorite WBB play by play announcer) and one other woman called the game. Was the other announcer Beth Mowins? They usually don't call ACC games. I watched the highlights of the game on You-tube.

charmin is not a gifted public speaker, next time the opportunity presents itself smith should immediately turn the mic over to lulu & let her speak from the heart for a couple of minutes!!

cal wbb needs to attract a younger fanbase particularly students, lulu with her exotic australian accent is the best person (not a 50 year old coach who repeats the same freakin thing over and over every time) to captivate & motivate this critical targeted market segment to attend future games at haas

this is literally marketing 101

Because Stanfurd was much taller and Ojukwu was having difficulty against them.

One reason it was an impressive win: Stanford is pretty tall, and Cal had to rely on defense, some of it from relatively inexperienced players and, in general, from players who are still learning to work together. This is what I really like about the college game: watching young athletes develop and grow.
