Or who were those guys?

I appreciate the work that S 71 put into his scouting report, but the problem was after you read it, you wondered who were those guys. You have no mental visual picture of who they looked like. It took me half the year to who our team was and what they looked like.

There are several reasons for that. A new conference so new teams. People graduate. But the biggest reason is the massive change in rosters each year.

In the old days of the Pac 12, I knew all the players on every team we played. We feared Kelsey Plum, knew she was left handed. Knew she could really shoot from the outside. And every year we knew their returning players so only had to deal with a few new ones.

Now I don't hardly know any of the ACC players. Even the teams we have played i don't remember who the players are let alone the teams we haven't played. We played Virginia and Va Tech butI don't remember last year's players nor this years players. So the names of the players with the stats, don't mean anything to me. If you showed me the stats from the players from Idaho State, they wouldn't mean anything to me.

And it will be the same for next year. I hope our players stay, and we should have a pretty good team next year with only few new additions. But the year before when I went to the open practice, I knew most of the players. And I knew what they did. But this year , after the first practice, I still wondered who these players were. I kind of figured out Mjaricle, who was very fast. And Sakima, who was very tall. And puff who was very short. But some of the others were a blur.

Anyone else feel that way.

I feel exactly the same. It's the way of college sports when you literally can't tell the players without a program (anyone else remember programs?). It's one of the worst things about this new era. Now when a new recruiting class is announced you don't familiarize yourself with four players who'll mostly be around the next four years you wonder if any of them will stick around for four years. As for getting to know opponents, they're just a series of strangers passing through. This has been another edition of an old fogey complains.

I think it is one reason we don't get the attendance. It is now Team X versus Team Y, with everyone looking at their roster sheets trying to figure out whom they are watching, Fortunately, they still play a few Cal fight songs in between all of the other noise, and you do gradually come to recognize our own players.

On top of players transferring every year, we are now playing in an 18 team conference instead of a 12 team conference. Thus, more teams and except for Furd we only play our conference foes once a year.

Yes, both BearBloke and I miss the Pac-12. I'd love to see Cal keeping more players longer, while competing against the Beavs and other west-coast teams.

FWIW our women's team is doing better with player retention than our men's team. This season our women have 5 returning scholarship players, including 2 starters. Last season it was 6 and 4.

This season our men have 3 returning scholarship players, including 1 starter. Last season it was 2 and 0.

At the beginning of the year it was one starter as Maul wasn't starting.

Claudia didn't play last year. so if you are comparing this year and last year she is new.

But I'm more concerned with visiting players. From last year i only remember the guard from Notre Dame. Hannah Hildago.

I knew that Lulu just does what we do.

I agree. I remembered Hannah Hidalgo's name but nothing else about her. It will take me somewhere between years and forever to remember any other players who aren't WNBA bound.

Last year Notre Dame was second in the conference. They lost their other outstanding guard to Texas Christian and their outstanding forward graduated. Last year we finished 7th . If Clemson beat Syracuse and then lost to us and

UNC or NC State and Syracuse lost to Duke, we could actually finish 5th.

Actually Clemson still plays Duke. Syracuse plays NC State and at Notre Dame.

BearBloke and I were just saying that neither of us had much sense of Virginia as a team, or as individuals. A good team, but sort of--colorless. (Hidalgo, though, made an impression: what a ferret! Fastest guard I can remember at Haas since Brittany Boyd, although Hidalgo's stats are better.)

Anyway, I miss really knowing, and sometimes really liking, the opposition.

Going into this Virginia Tech game, I didn't recognize a single player on their roster and had to look up the name of their coach. I also have no desire to ever visit Blacksburg, although I do like Charlottesville.

My daughter went to school near Blacksburg. Roanoke is a good town and you are by the Appalachian Hiway. Also Smith Lake.

Charlottesville is great. If you like American history and the Constitution, it's your place. Visit Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe's homes. Plus Jefferson founded the University of Virginia.

There are some nice towns in the ACC. But I wouldn't want to visit many of them in the Winter time, especially with the long travel distances. Fall in New England is terrific, but when I lived in Boston, winters were abysmal. We need to join a league that includes Hawaii, San Diego and Santa Barbara.

You are correct. the problem is winter time. North Carolina is also pretty good. The Raleigh-Durham is nice and Asheville is great.

agree that it's harder to get as emotionally attached to players and I know fewer of the opponent's players because of all the transfers.

Players like Marta played for Cal for two years, and transferring out was her personal decision but I still feel differently about her than players who finished their careers at Cal, especially players such as Leilani and Michelle who stayed their entire career (even 5th year)
