Hopefully Charmin is creating new connections to the Team USA players and can recruit them Cal

USA Basketball Women's U18 team.

#1 2027 prospect, Kaleena Smith, is on this team. She also took an official visit to Cal earlier this year.

Not necessarily.

It did give both Charmin and Kaleena Smith an opportunity to get to know each other better - personally and coaching-wise.

This is what espn.com posted on June 3 (before tournament).

No. 1 Kaleena Smith

Point guard | 5-foot-6 | Ontario Christian (Calif.)

Schools of interest:
UConn, USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Baylor, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Georgia, Miami, Arizona State, Oklahoma

No Cal mention.

Kaleena Smith is not coming to Cal. She never was.

Right now, Cal is not in a position to get that kind of player absent an athletic miracle.

To get there, filling Haas and playing in at least the Elite Eight is a minimum.

Oh well. Meanwhile I'm enjoying the players we have and the upward trajectory we seem to be on.

I'd rather have players who are here because they value what Cal can offer them, and that choose to stay. The Chronicle piece yesterday spoke to that. In this era, having our core return is great and, at least, makes this fan happy and looking forward to the coming season.

Oh, so she came on an official visit here just to show pity for us? Lol. Most likely it was out of respect for Charmin.

No one here ever said she was leaning in our direction or ready to commit. So, no need to act all high and mighty.

Is Cal out of contention for any of the team USA and Team Canada players?

Besides Kaleena Smith, we have also offered two of her teammates on the U18 US National team.

Class of 2027
Sydney Savoury, 6' G from Michigan. Offered June 2025
Jayla Forbes, 6'7 F/C from Alabama. Offered September 2023

I saw Charmin last night at the Valkyries' game -- she said the Canadians had a couple of good players and obviously she enjoyed coaching USA Basketball and the access to the athletes.

We'll see if that pays off down the road, but the competition for players at that level is intense -- and expensive.

And I do think it's great that there are so many returners. It's a tribute to Charmin and her staff ...
