Estonian breaststroker Egle Salu has committed to Cal:

Cal breaststroke is in very good hands. She'll have 3 years of training with the incoming freshmen duo of Elle Scott (top US junior breaststroker) and Silje Slyngstadli (Norwegian elite breaststroker), and 4 years training with 2026 classmate Halle West (Canadian junior team breaststroker).

30.9/1:09.3 LCM Breaststroker Egle Salu Announces Commitment To Cal For Fall 2026

Egle Salu of Rakvere, Estonia, has committed to swim and study at Cal, beginning in the 20262027 school year.

The Estonian most recently competed at the European Junior Championships in July, where she walked away with silver in the 50 breast. She clocked 31.19 in that final after logging 30.98 in prelims, which just missed her lifetime best of 30.97 from the Akvile Lietuvos Plaukimo Cempionatas meet in April.

If she transitions smoothly, she's in position to challenge for the team's best sprint breaststroker, especially for the 50 breast leg of the 200 medley relay.

Salu will join a breaststroke group that is heavily rebuilding with two top-tier commits just arriving on campus. The #12-ranked recruit in the high school class of 2025, Elle Scott, had the fastest 100 breast time in the class at 58.56. This will make her the only swimmer on the Cal team under 59 seconds in the event, and puts her just outside of 'A' final scoring position at NCAAs, coming in at 13th overall with 58.30 placing 8th.
Scott's 200 breast of 2:08.62 would have been first alternate last year, less than a tenth outside of finals scoring position.

The Golden Bears also now have Norwegian Worlds qualifier Silje Slyngstadli. She was 29th in the 100 breast at the World Championships in Singapore and her best time of 1:07.53 converts to 59.83, which is about three tenths over the cutline.

Cal had one individual breaststroke scorer last year in rising senior Abigail Herscu. Her 2:08.47 in the 200 breast garnered her 8th at NCAAs. She also swam the 100 breast, finishing 28th with a new career best of 59.97.

Salu joins the Golden Bears' class of 2030 with Isabel Wolk, Ava DeAnda, Kelsey Zhang, Madeline Kohel, and Halle West.

It looks like Cal will evolve into a breaststroke power as all of these young ladies join the team. It's been a while since the female Bears have dominated in this event. GO BEARS!

As of today, looks like Kassy Yeung and Aukan Goldin have yet to sign NLIs/have their documents processed by compliance. Yeung should hopefully be signing soon; she was racing at Chinese Nationals this past week and a half. Everyone else is official.

Bears have also added Egyptian Olympic diver Malak Tawfik to the squad, another big welcome to her.

Maddy Kohel write-up by Swimswam. Looks like two outstanding divers for the 2026 class.

Quote:

RipFest Diving Club's Madeline Kohel has committed ot the University of California as a part of the Golden Bears' 2026 recruiting class.
Kohel was ranked the #2 diving recruit in SwimSwam's ranking of the top 10 diving recruits in the girls' class of 2026.
Quote:

I'm so excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley! I can't wait to continue my academic and diving career at Cal. Thank you endlessly to my family, friends, and coaches for supporting me throughout this journey. GO BEARS

Kohel hails from Minneapolis, Minn., where she represents Minneapolis Washburn High School. She has collected a pair of MNSHSL Girls Class AA State championship titles on 1-meter. As a sophomore, she notched her first state win, with a score of 520.20.
The following year (2024), Kohel repeated as champion on the 1-meter, scoring 479.05.
Kohel competed at the 2025 USA Diving Junior National Championships, where she earned a podium finish, placing 3rd on 1-meter (371.25), and also took 23rd on 3-meter (224.25). In her career, she has been a five-time finalist at the USA Diving Junior National Championships.
Best Scores:
  • 1-meter: 449.60
  • 3-meter: 434.45
  • Platform: 294.35.
The Cal women finished 4th at the 2025 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships and 8th at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships last season.
Kohel will join Malak Tawfik in the 2026 diving class for Cal; Tawfik was a 2024 Paris Olympian for Egypt. The two will add much-needed depth to this Cal diving group.
Cal's highest-scoring ACC Championships diver a season ago was Violet Williamson, who finished 20th in the 1-meter (237.10) and 21st in the 3-meter (264.90).
Williamson was the lone Golden Bear female diver at NCAAs last season as well, finishing 43rd on both 1-meter and 3-meter, outside of scoring position.
Kohel joins Isabel Wolk, Halle West, Kelsey Zhang, Ava De Anda, Kassy Yeing, and Egle Salu in Cal's 2026 recruiting class.

Haven't looked at results too closely, but Jordan Ragland just won the junior national title in both sprint free events (19.28/42.24) in Austin. Dropped over half a second in the 50 and nearly 2 in the 100. Think he also had some very solid 100 back/100 breast swims to cap off a great weekend.

Phenomenal addition to our relatively lacking sprint group (in comparison to previous years).

Just reposting the discussion from the 2027 topic on Rylee Erisman's commitment to Cal and her reclassification to 2026.

She is now solidly in the conversation over who should be ranked #1 for the recruiting class of 2026, with former #1 Charlotte Crush as her challenger for the top ranking.

swimmer19 said:

The previous 2027 recruit has yet to make their commitment public.

HOWEVER, from Josh Huger as of an hour ago:
"Class of 2027 2026 + 1... Cal W Swim +1", noting that the 2027 recruit will enroll with our 2026 signees. Makes me think this might be Rylee Erisman and that she will be joining us a year early. Fingers crossed.

Edit from Braden Keith on Twitter, referencing Huger's post: Cannot confirm this is her but rumor there was going around that Rylee Erisman was going to graduate early and start early, wherever she wound up…

That being said, Braden's rumor sources have been correct in having knowledge of our recent top women's commits before the athletes themselves made an announcement.

Rylee Erisman: I'm honored and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of California, Berkeley. I would also like to announce I will be reclassifying to the graduating class of 2026. I'm so grateful for my family, coaches at Laker Swim, and friends who have supported me throughout this journey. A special thank you to all the coaching staff at CAL! I could not be more excited for this opportunity!

World Junior Champion Rylee Erisman Sends Verbal To Cal, Reclassifies To Class of 2026

Woohoo & yay yay - welcome to Bear Territory, Rylee, LFG!!!

Some highlights from the above article:

" Erisman, ranked #2 in the girls' high school class of 2027, will graduate high school earlier than expected and join the Bears this coming fall.

The 16-year-old will head to Berkeley from her native Florida, where she trains at Laker Swim under coach Kyle Goller and also represents Windermere High School in the FHSAA.

Erisman has been on a record-breaking tear throughout 2025, most recently breaking Gretchen Walsh's National High School Record in the girls' 100 freestyle in a time of 46.73 at the 2025 FHSAA 4A State Championships, where she successfully defended both her titles in the 50 free (21.61) and 100 free.

This past summer, Erisman delivered a dominant performance at the 2025 World Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania, winning five gold and eight total medals, the most any swimmer has ever won at a single edition of the meet.

In the girls' high school class of 2027, Erisman held the fastest time in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 free, and the 100 back. Reclassifying to the class of 2026, she would still rank 1st in the 50, 100 and 200 free, overtaking Charlotte Crush, who ranked #1 in the class and holds respective bests of 21.88, 47.85 and 1:44.34.

Erisman's best time in the 100 free would've placed 4th at the 2025 Women's NCAA Championships;

Erisman's 50 free time is also fast enough to make the 2025 NCAA 'A' final (21.63 tied for 7th in the prelims), while her 200 free PB would have placed 10th in the NCAA prelims, just over a quarter of a second shy of what it took to make the top eight last season (1:43.24). In the 100 back, her lifetime best of 51.36 is 16 one-hundredths back of what it took to earn a second swim in 2025 (51.20).

After a few down years, the Cal women have been on the upswing with some key freshmen joining the team this season, including five from the top-20 in the high school class of 2025. Leading the way are #2 Teagan O'Dell and #3 Claire Weinstein, and they've also added #5 Annie Jia, #12 Elle Scott and #18 Ella Cosgrove.

In Cal's class of 2026, Erisman joins ranked recruits #5 Kelsey Zhang, #9 Ava De Anda, along with Madeline Kohel, Egle Salu, Isabel Wolk, Canadian Halle West, Hong Kong's Kassy Yeung and Egyptian Olympic diver Malak Tawfik."

New writeup & award for Rylee Erisman:

2025 Swammy Awards: Age Group Swimmers of the Year --15-16

The 15-16 age group presented two very different races for Swimmer of the Year. While the boys' award was a clear-cut decision, the girls' honor came down to a close call between Rylee Erisman and Audrey Derivaux.
In evaluating, we weighed performances across long course and short course, World Juniors, and relay contributions. Ultimately, this year's 15-16 Age Group Swimmer of the Year Awards go to Luka Mijatovic and Erisman, each earning the honor for the second straight year.

15-16 Girls
Rylee Erisman, Laker Swim
(Coach: Kyle Goller)

Erisman didn't rest on her laurels for long, as less than two months after World Juniors she returned to the pool and broke Gretchen Walsh's National High School Record in the 100 free (46.73) at the 2025 FHSAA 4A State Championships. There, she successfully defended both her titles in the 50 free (21.61) and 100 free.

She finished her 2025 season at the Winter Junior Championships this month, breaking Katie Ledecky's 1516 National Age Group (NAG) record in the 200 free by over a second with a time of 1:40.93.

Erisman also won the 50 free (21.95), 100 free (46.85), and 500 free (4:34.60). Her 500 time represented a massive drop from the 4:43.35 personal best she entered the meet with.

Her best times in the 50 and 100 remain 21.61 and 46.69, from November and December of 2024, respectively.

Update: yet another Rylee article!

How Unusual Is Rylee Erisman's 21.6 in the 50 Free + 4:34 in the 500 Free?

16-year-old American sprinter Rylee Erisman turned heads at the recent USA Swimming Winter Junior Championships - East meet, winning all four of her individual events in dominating fashion.

It was the two longest of these races that caught the most attention, as they were new revelations for the young Floridian. She swam 1:40.93 in the 200 free, which ranks her as the 16th-fastest performer in history (of any age), and 4:34.60 in the 500 free, making her the 8th-fastest swimmer in 15-16 history.

This begged the question: just how rare was this range? A swimmer capable of going 4:34.60 in the 500 free and 21.61 in the 50 free.

The answer is incredibly rare. In fact, of the 51 women all-time who have been 4:34-or-better in the 500 free, only four have been under 22 seconds in the 50 free, and only one has been faster than Erisman.

This data will have some bias to it because most of the swimmers who have been 4:34-or-better haven't swum a tapered flat-start 50 free in their senior careers.

But context that also matters: at this meet, Erisman didn't go best times in her best events. Her meet-best in the 50 free was 21.95, and she has been 21.6 more than once.

And she's only 16.

While National High School and National Age Group Records from Erisman in the 50 and 100 free have built her as a pure sprinter, this performance implies that as she grows and matures, she might find a space internationally as more of a modern 100/200 freestyler, ala a Mollie O'Callaghan.

Erisman, like O'Callaghan, is tall by a normal definition, but not overly tall in the context of swimming like the 6'1 Gretchen Walsh or the 6'0 tall Sarah Sjostrom.

Erisman is graduating high school early and will begin training at Cal in the fall of 2026 at only 17 years old.

Rylee Erisman talks about her Cal commitment:
Rylee Erisman & Audrey Derivaux Take Over Winter Juniors | Records & Big Commits | Swim & Tell

On choosing Cal: When I got to Cal, it was just a different feeling. Everyone I talked to throughout the recruiting process said that "You'll know when you get there", and I knew that when I got to Cal that this was my place and I was sad to leave, and I fell in love with the coaches and the team. Coach Dave (Durden) made me feel super comfortable and confident with my decision to come in a year early. I'm most excited to be in an environment surrounded by teammates who want the same thing, where everyone loves working hard and has their eyes on the same goals, while supporting each other.

On swimming together with Ryan (older brother): It's really exciting having him at Cal. He's having a great freshman year, which makes me happy to see. He works super hard, and he deserves it all. He loves it (in Berkeley) and is having a great time, and I'm excited to be with him again. We work really well together and having him there provides me with more support and I know I'll always have someone to lean on.

SwimSwam's Top 100 For 2026: Women's #40-31

Rylee Erisman earns her first Top 100 designation at #36 after her breakthrough performance at the 2025 World Junior Championships.

Welcome to the SwimSwam Top 100 Swimmers of 2026: Women's Edition. This is our outlook on the top 100 swimmers to watch globally in 2026.

The principles for ranking:
  • Trajectory
  • Age
  • Performance in 2023-2024-2025 (more recent results weighted more heavily)
  • Anomalies to trajectories (one bad year doesn't mean a swimmer isn't still one of the best in the world, if it was pretty isolated or illness may have impacted performance)
  • Versatility. A swimmer who might be #3 in the world in three events could leap a one-trick pony who is #1 or #2 in their best event and outside the top 10 in their next-best event.
  • Competitive Atmosphere. A swimmer ranked #9 in the world in a more competitive event could be ranked higher than a finalist in a less competitive event.
#36 Rylee Erisman, United States (2025 Rank: NR) - Very few swimmers had a bigger breakthrough in 2025 than 16-year-old Rylee Erisman. She came into the long course season with a lifetime best in the 100 free of 53.75 from the Junior Pan Pacs in August of 2024. At the 2025 World Junior Championships in Romania, she dropped half-a-second to swim 53.17 in the prelims, shattering the Championship record of 53.63 from 2017. In the semifinals, she dropped another tenth to swim 53.09, and in the final, she swam a massive 52.79, which would have won the bronze medal in the 100 free at the 2025 World Championships. Since then, Erisman has exploded, swimming huge SCY times, including a 1:40.93 in the 200 free and a 4:34.60 in the 500 free at the 2025 Winter Junior Nationals. Erisman's World Juniors 100 free also earned her a spot on the Pan Pacs team this summer, which will be her first senior international experience. She will also likely participate on American relays, and her 2026 performance will hinge on her ability to handle the pressure of a senior meet and potential World Record relays, but a domestic Pan Pacs meet will be a great place to start for the teenager as she sets her sights on the WJR in the 100 free.

Some outstanding times (in the midst of heavy training) by our 2026 Baby Bears (women) from the 2026 TYR Pro Swim Series @ Westmont last week (Long Course Meters):

Rylee Erisman:
50 Free - 24.95 = #2 (A final runner-up) ....... [#1 Gretchen Walsh @ 24.39]
100 Free - 53.54 = #2 (A final runner-up) ... [#1 Kate Douglass @ 53.45]
200 Free - 1:56.71 = #2 (A final runner-up) ..[#1 Summer McIntosh @ 1:53.80]
400 Free - 4:14.62 = #9 (B final winner) ... would have placed 7th in the A final with that time

-----------

Rylee Erisman Shares 4-Week Off-The-Block Ladder Set

Excerpt: "the Monday before Westmont, she suited up and did 4x100 (one of them was all out), where she went 46.9 (Short Course Yards)"

lilac: " are you serious 46.9 in practice????"

For some context, Cal Women's All-Time Top 10 currently lists just 2 Bears who have gone faster than Rylee in the 100 Free - Abbey Weitzeil (46.35) & Missy Franklin (46.66) ... Rylee's PB is a 46.69 from Dec 2024

-----------

Kelsey Zhang:
200 Fly 2:12.59 = #4
100 Fly - 1:00.23 = #6 (PB = 1:00.10 from 2024 Olympic Trials)
200 IM - 2:17.46 = #7 (Prelims) => would have placed 8th in the A final with her prelims time
50 Fly - 27.68 = #11 (had swum a PB of 27.58 in her Prelims)

===========================

Additionally, these performances from a couple of Cal alumnae at the meet:

Isabelle Stadden (now training @ UVa with their pro group):
100 Back - 58.26 PB = #1 (Winner!)
200 Back - 2:05.91 PB = #2 (A final runner-up) ....... [#1 Regan Smith @ 2:04.90]
50 Back - 27.29 PB = #2 (A final runner-up) ....... [#1 Katharine Berkoff @ 27.24]

Lea Polonsky:
200 IM - 2:15.38 = #5
400 IM - 4:53.58 = #6
100 Free - 58.08 = #24 (Semis)
200 Free - 2:19.22 = #24 (C final)

TOP 20 SWIMMERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2026

Best Times:

  • 200 fly: 1:53.51 (best in class)
  • 100 fly: 51.78
  • 200 IM: 1:57.09
  • 400 IM: 4:13.27
  • 100 back: 53.59
  • 100 breast: 1:01.34
  • 200 breast: 2:14.32
  • 500 free: 4:48.16
  • 200 free: 1:47.04
  • 100 free: 49.97
  • 50 free: 23.11
Zhang is the top 200 fly swimmer in the class, though her best time of 1:53.51 is now more than two years old, having been set in April 2024. She went 1:54.16 during the 2024-25 season, and as a high school senior, her fastest time has come in at 1:55.05. That puts her just shy of the NCAA scoring cut-off in 2026 (1:54.99), but her best time is knocking on the door of the 'A' final (1:53.24), and there's no reason to believe she can't get back there at Cal. In the 100 fly, she's broken 52 seconds three times in her career, something only three other swimmers in this class have done at all, putting her in NCAA scoring range. Zhang's PB of 51.78, set in April 2025, is under the 2026 NCAA cutline (52.03) and within a half-second of the scoring threshold (51.33). This past weekend, she won the CIF state title in a time of 51.83. Two events she did improve on this past season were the 200 IM (1:57.09) and 200 free (1:47.04), while she was close to her PBs in the 100 back and 100 breast. Cal is on an upward trajectory of late, and that includes in butterfly, with Annie Jia making the NCAA final of the 100 fly last season as a freshman, and Mia West winning the ACC title in the 200 fly as a sophomore, making for a great training environment for Zhang. The current NCAA schedule doesn't line up perfectly for the Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics product, as the 200 IM conflicts with the 200 fly and the 200 free coincides with the 100 fly. If she wants to avoid doubles, and the schedule doesn't change, the 100 back is more likely an option over the 500 free, given that she's only raced the 500 once since 2023.

2. Charlotte Crush (Previous Rank: #1) Lakeside Swim Team Sacred Heart Academy Louisville, KY **Committed to Tennessee**

Crush was the undisputed top-ranked recruit in this class prior to Rylee Erisman reclassifying, but despite sliding to #2, Crush still has three events on her resume fast enough to make the NCAA 'A' final while also being a future relay stalwart at Tennessee.

1. Rylee Erisman (Previous Rank: #2, 2027 Windermere Lakers Windermere High School Windermere, FL **Committed to Cal**

Best Times:

  • 200 free: 1:40.93 (best in class)
  • 100 free: 46.69 (best in class)
  • 50 free: 21.61 (best in class)
  • 500 free: 4:34.60 (best in class)
  • 100 back: 51.36
  • 200 back: 1:54.28
  • 200 IM: 1:57.54
  • 400 IM: 4:15.98
  • 200 fly: 1:59.12
  • 100 fly: 54.34
Having reclassified after initially being a part of the girls' high school class of 2027, Erisman takes over as the top-ranked recruit in the class as a generational freestyle talent who figures to not only be an NCAA superstar, but a future pillar for the U.S. women on the international stage. The Windereme Lakers product had one of the best performances of the year at the end of 2025, dropping a time of 1:40.93 in the 200 free at Winter Juniors East to break Katie Ledecky's 15-16 NAG record by more than a second and become just the 11th American ever under the 1:41 barrier. The swim makes Erisman the fastest swimmer in this class by nearly three and a half seconds, and would've placed her 4th at the 2026 NCAA Championships.

In the 100 free, Erisman set the 15-16 NAG record back in December 2024 in a time of 46.69, which would've made the NCAA final this past season and makes her more than a second faster than anyone in this class. She also set her lifetime best of 21.61 in the 50 free towards the end of 2024, which also would've scored at NCAAs.

At the FHSAA 4A State Championships this past November, she defended her titles with new season-bests in the 50 free (21.67) and 100 free (46.73), narrowly missing her best times.

In addition to her groundbreaking swim in the 200 free at Winter Juniors East in December, she also ripped a massive PB of 4:34.60 in the 500 free, giving her four events in which she's the top-ranked swimmer in the class, and it also would've placed 5th at the 2026 NCAAs.

Erisman has been focusing on long course through the first four and a half months of 2026, notably setting new personal bests in the 200 free (1:56.71), 400 free (4:11.02), 100 back (59.25) and 200 back (2:08.20), showing impressive form and indicating her SCY backstroke best times of 51.36/1:54.28 are probably outdated. Her 100 back PB is still an NCAA scoring time, but in the 200 back, a long course 2:08 indicates she can probably be at least three seconds faster than her 1:54.2 from January 2025.

Headed to a Cal team on the rise, Erisman instantly slots in as the centerpiece of the Golden Bears' free relays and the anchor leg for their medleys, and she'll make a lethal 1-2 duo alongside Claire Weinstein in the 800 free relay for years to come. Virginia's Anna Moesch has two more years of eligibility left, and she's probably the only swimmer standing in Erisman's way of winning multiple individual NCAA titles right away, but Erisman is certainly capable of giving her a good run as soon as next season before the floodgates open.

Erisman certainly is a fantastic free style swimmer from 50 to 500m. How does she compare to Weinstein and the swimmer (O'Dell) that transferred out?

Saratoga's Kelsey Zhang had two victories at the California state championships over the weekend. She set a new state meet record in the 100 butterfly in 51.83. She also captured the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 1 minute, 58.07 seconds.

Tim Wu also triumphed in the 200 individual medley in 1:44.83. He finished 1st in 100 backstroke in 47.17, too.

Not sure if these SCY PBs are accurate (source = USA Swimming), but to answer your question:

50 free:
21.61 (Erisman)
22.14 (O'Dell)
22.51 (Weinstein))

100 free:
46.69 (Erisman)
47.57 (Weinstein)
47.74 (O'Dell)

200 free:
1:40.93 (Erisman)
1:41.10 (Weinstein)
1:42.27 (O'Dell)

500 free:
4:29.38 (Weinstein)
4:34.60 (Erisman)
4:39.29 (O'Dell)

Oh there's also been some chatter about changes to the top end ranking of this 2026 recruiting class, hinting that Swimswam's #1 recruit for 2027 (Audrey Derivaux, committed to Texas) may be re-classifying to 2026, following in the footsteps of her friend Rylee Erisman...

In which case, I'd re-rank the top 3 for 2026 as follows:
#1 Rylee Erisman -> Bears
#2 Audrey Derivaux -> Horns
#3 Charlotte Crush -> Vols

Thankyou. Erisman will likely anchor Cal's freestyle relay teams. She finally gives us a strong freestyle sprinter.

It's highly likely she will anchor all the relays.

200 & 400 fr relays
200 & 400 MR
800 relay

5 total but not sure what the rules on how many you can swim in.

athletes can either swim 3 individual events and 4 relays or 2 individual events and 5 relays.

Erisman should likely be swimming all 3 free relays and anchor the 400 medley relay. That way, Mia West can anchor the 200 medley relay and sit out the 400 medley relay.

Bears should contend for top 2 in the 400 and 800 free relays with the addition of Erisman. Will need one more leg for the 200 free relay (Annie Jia?)

Ragland lowers his 50 free best time to 19.18 at CIF State last weekend, taking down a stacked field to win. He also won the 100 free in 42.33, just off his junior national best time.

Excited for the future of Cal men sprinting... Ragland and Albert Smelzer (US National Junior Teamer from NC) will have 2 years to train with Battaglini, Okadome, and Arkhangelskiy, and 3 years with Wrede and Puggaard. Additionally, Tim Wu had a great year, look for him and Baylor Stanton to join mid-distance group led by coach Yanchulis. Our diver commit Jasper Nemeth finished 2nd on springboard at CIF and is the #7 ranked diver in the 2026 recruiting class. Looking forward to our signees' arrival to campus in August.
