NCAA 2026 Pre-Conference Review: Women's Breakout Swimmers

With the conclusion of the dual meet season, schools across the country are gearing up for their conference championships and the subsequent NCAA championships at the end of March.

While for many swimmers their main tapered swims are still to come, there have been swimmers who have taken a leap already this year. There are always bolters in the NCAA, athletes who vault from relative obscurity to a key role for their team,or become a title threat after sitting a level or two below the very top.

Some of these names may be prominent in the postseason in a way that may come as a surprise. We have highlighted seven swimmers who may not be on your radar, but should make a splash over the next few weeks.

Note that this list will not include any freshmen they will have their own list. Here we are highlighting swimmers who were already in college, but have stepped up to reach another level compared to seasons past.

Mia West (CAN) Cal, Sophomore

West has had an absolutely phenomenal second season at Cal so far, with ACCs and NCAAs still to come. She has set best times in every single one of the events she has swum this season, and is currently ranked in the top-16 in seven events: the 100 free (47.51), 200 free (1:41.74), 100 back (50.78), 100 fly (51.12), 200 fly (1:53.32), 200 IM (1:54.77), and 400 IM (4:04.91).

That is elite versatility, but does not highlight just how much time she has dropped. She has taken multiple seconds off in multiple events, transitioning from a 'B' and 'C' final swimmer at ACCs last year to a nailed on 'A' finalist and NCAA threat. Add in that she has four 50 free splits of 21.57 or better this season and three 100 free splits of 47.15 or better, and she may well be Cal's most important swimmer this year.

The improvements have come thick and fast. Her best times in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, and 100 back have all come in January, and she has swum at least two best times at all six of her meets so far this season.

It would be hard to overstate just how much of a breakout West has been - even if she did not set another best time this year, she is almost certainly already the breakout story of the year. The Cal women have had some elite internationals recently - Lea Polonsky, Mary-Ambre Moluh, and Alicia Wilson spring to mind - and West seems set to be the best of the bunch.

NCAA 2026 Pre-Conference Review: Men's Breakout Swimmers

Lucca Battaglini (USA) Cal, Sophomore

Jack Alexy broke out in his second year at Cal, and it looks like the same is happening for Lucca Battaglini. He was an ACC 'B' finalist last season in the 50 free but missed NCAA qualification by a tenth of a second. After his midseason swims this year, there will be no near-misses for him.

He dropped significant time in all the events he swam there in Minnesota. He threw down a pair of 18.7s in the 50 free, breaking 19 seconds for the first time, and then hacked a second off his 100 free best of 42.60 to take the win in 41.56. Both of those swims would have scored at 2025 NCAAs, and he added a 45.39 100 fly (it took 44.94 to score) and a rapid 20.59 50 back leadoff - a second faster than he was last year.

He added free relay splits of 18.45/40.89, both quick enough to have made Cal's relay teams last season. He should now be Cal's go-to sprint freestyler, and is one of their top swimmers in what is a transitional year for the Bears.

Next week Cal Bears will compete at the ACC meet. It seems an ESPN subscription is needed to watch the races.

Link for the meet: https://theacc.com/feature/swimdive-championship

At the Stanford meet, it appeared that most freshmen had begun easing off training while Claire Weinstein, Teagan O'Dell, Ryan Erisman, Casper Puggaard, and Martin Wrede were still not rested. They are probably focusing on the NC more. Every year Cal Coaches rest most freshmen for the Conference Meet while other Bears rest and peak for the NC.

#9.Tennessee Volunteers - (Previous Rank: 9)
#8. NC State Wolfpack - (Previous Rank: 8)

Although she didn't immediately project as a top tier addition, freshman Silje Slynstadli has made an impact in a hurry. She broke the program record in the 100 breast with a 58.21 last month against Stanford, and we have to imagine that she, along with the rest of the Golden Bears, should have more in the tank come championships season. - R.G.

=#9: Stanford Cardinal -1 (Previous Rank: 8)
Stanford had a massive meet against Cal to kick the month off, taking the win against a team that is struggling this season. They picked up some strong freshmen, including Ethan Ekk, who will be huge point scorers for them next month. - M.F.

=#9: Florida State Seminoles +1 (Previous Rank: 10)
#8: Tennessee Volunteers +1 (Previous Rank: 9)

#7: California Golden Bears - (Previous Rank: 7)
It almost feels weird ranking Cal so low this season, but the numbers speak for themselves. The Bears always seem to have a rabbit to pull out of their hat in the postseason. Yamato Okadome was their breakout freshman last year, and now they've got Ryan Erisman and Nathan Wiffen to go along with Lucca Battaglini's standout sophomore campaign. They've also got some sneaky solid relay pieces, but it was still be a surprise to see them break into the top five at NCAAs. - J.S.

ACC Pre-Scratch Psych Sheets Released; Torri Huske to Choose Between 50 Free and 200 IM on Day One

The ACC has released their final pre-meet psych sheet for the 2026 ACC Championships that are due to start swimming events on Wednesday, February 18th.

As usual, the psych sheets don't tell us much as most of the top swimmers are over entered, either because they are still deciding their final event schedule or because they don't want other teams to figure out what they are doing.
  • Cal's Mia West is entered in 9 events, more than any other swimmer. Her entries include every event on day one and day two: 500 free (8th), 200 IM (6th), 50 free (22nd), 400 IM (7th), 100 fly (7th), 200 free (3rd), 200 fly (5th), 100 back (7th), 100 free (6th).
  • Claire Weinstein, also from Cal, is entered in five events, the 100 free (12th), 200 free (5th), 500 free (2nd), 1650 free (1st), and 400 IM (19th).
Reader comments:

- "I think West does the 200 IM/200 FR/200 FL. Weinstein prob does the 200/500/1650."

" My understanding is that the limit is on how many athletes actually compete. Teams can over-enter so they have a cushion in case an athlete gets sick/hurt between now and next week. So, some of those entered won't actually end up swimming next week."

The 2025 ACC Championships saw the addition of a few major programs from the collapse of the PAC-12. Stanford and Cal finished 2nd and 4th in their first year in the conference, and Virginia continued to reign supreme as they picked up their 6th straight title by more than 300 points over Stanford.

Stanford is looking like a clear pick for 2nd place with their performances this season, but Louisville, Cal, and NC State will all be trying to move up into better positions after their 3rd, 4th, and 5th place finishes in 2025.

    Swimmers to Watch

Cal Berkeley - Mary-Ambre Moluh (Sophomore - free/back), Mia West (Sophomore - free/back/fly/IM), Claire Weinstein (Freshman - free), Teagan O'Dell (Freshman - back/IM), Ella Cosgrove (Freshman - distance free)

The Golden Bears were 4th last year, and their team only seems to be stronger this year with their exceptional freshman class helping boost the program

Starting with the returning swimmers, they have the number one scorer from last season, Mary-Ambre Moluh coming back after racking up 73 points in 2025. This year, she ranks 11th in the 50 free (21.79), 8th in the 100 free (47.43), and 6th in the 100 back (50.61). Her 100 free is faster than it was at this point last season and her 50 free and 100 back are just off (21.57/49.68). She will likely be a huge scorer for Cal and will have huge relay duties.

Mia West is also a returner for Cal, but her point potential has skyrocketed from last year. In 2025, she scored 25 points for the team with one 'B' finals swim and two 'A' finals swims. She has had an exceptional season, setting numerous best times and currently sits in the top-8 in the conference in the 100 free (5th - 47.22), 200 free (3rd - 1:41.74), 500 free (8th - 4:39.75), 100 back (7th - 50.78), 100 fly (7th - 51.12), 200 fly (5th - 1:53.32), 200 IM (6th - 1:54.77), and 400 IM (8th - 4:04.91). It is not clear what West will swim this year, but whatever it is, she will be a huge 'A' finals threat whenever she gets on the blocks and could be looking at 60+ points.

Moving onto the freshmen, Claire Weinstein has the top time in the 1650 in the ACC (15:52.28), the 2nd fastest time in the 500 free (4:24.81), and the 5th fastest time in the 200 free (1:42.13), where she is a World Champs medalist. It would be shocking if she doesn't earn three top-8 finishes for Cal and she will probably find herself in the 70 point range. It is also not outside the realm of possibility that she wins all three of her events.

Teagan O'Dell, and Ella Cosgrove are also freshmen who have multiple 'A' final event potential. O'Dell is a major backstroke/IM contender at 4th in the 100 back (50.51), 6th in the 200 back (1:51.13), and 2nd in the 200 IM (1:53.19). Cosgrove is a distance freestyler who is 7th in the 500 (4:39.26), and 6th in the 1650 (16:13.97).

    Races to Watch

100 Breast - The women's 100 breaststroke has been fast this season, particularly in the ACC. This season, five swimmers have already been under that winning mark with four of them swimming sub-58 seconds. Lucy Bell has the top seed at 57.60, but just seven hundredths behind her Louisville's Anastasia Gorbenko and NC State's Eneli Jefimova are tied at 57.67. After them, we have Emma Weber (57.96), Cal's Silje Slyngstadli (58.21), Aimee Canny (58.30) and Gridley (58.46).

200 free While UVA's Anna Moesch seems to be the clear favorite for the win in the 200 free, the spots from 2nd to 5th come in just half-a-second separated, and in those top five is SCM American Record holder Claire Weinstein. Moesch holds the lead at 1:40.25, nearly a second-and-a-half ahead of UVA teammate Madi Mintenko, who is 2nd at 1:41.70. Mintenko is followed by Cal's Mia West (1:41.74), Aimee Canny (1:41.85), and Weinstein (1:42.13). If anyone makes the leap to Moesch's 1:40.25, Weinstein would be one of the least surprising. The race will be a preview of what we can expect to see at NCAAs, where there have already been eight swimmers under 1:42 this season.

Louisville, Cal, and NC State could organize themselves in any way, but have separated themselves as a dominant top five.

Cal has some exceptional swimmers, but many of their top athletes are freshmen which makes it hard to predict how they will perform at an NCAA conference meet. Cal also historically does not execute a full taper, particularly for their top swimmers who are practically locked into the NCAA Championships, so they could drop below NC State in the ACC rankings.

Bears with a school record relay to kick off the meet!!

Moluh (23.26), Slyngstadli (26.42), Jia (22.73) and West (20.88) combine for a 1:33.29 to beat out last year's record by 0.2 and finish 4th in a ridiculous race overall.

Coaches need to change the men's relay lineup. Bears were swimming in wash the entire first 150. Battaglini went 20.5 leading off the medley relay at midseason, and Petty probably has a 18 split for free since his flat start best time this year is a 19.1.

Women's lineup looks solid. Was concerned about O'Dell swimming this relay but looks like coaches have made necessary adjustments to max out relay potential for her, Moluh, and West.

not an expert but I'll take a stab. I think it means the wake and waves created by swimmers in front of one. smoother water being better.

Men's 800 free relay holds up for bronze from the first heat after the team has not entered the event all season. Mazellier (1:33.83), Jones (1:31.75), Moraes (1:32.24) and Erisman (1:31.71) combine for a 6:09.53.

Concerned about the leadoff - Mazellier's 1:33.8 is not going to cut it at NCAAs. 6:09 would have been 10th at NCAAs last year, behind ASU and just ahead of Ohio State.

    Thanks for the post, swimmer19!

It's always a pleasure to see the stellar breakout performance of someone who wasn't on people's radar, after a year of training & development here!

I can't wait to see how Mia does at ACCs the next few days, and at NCAAs when she will be more rested & tapered!

In the words of DJ Khaled... Bears with another one (ACC title). Okadome wins the 100 breast (50.34) in a pool/ACC record. Gissendaner joins him on the podium in 3rd (51.48), and Rivers finishes 5th in 51.68 in a strong event for both teams.

A nice shoutout to the team in Okadome's post-race interview, noting that "Cal was the best decision I made."

Men pick up their 2nd ACC team title and women finish 3rd while outperforming so many expectations.

Congrats to both teams. Time to get some rest and prepare for the big show.

Bears Place Third At ACC Championshps

Strong Week Results In Three School Records

ATLANTA - The renaissance of the California women's swimming & diving program took another step Saturday when the Golden Bears finished third at the 2025 ACC Championships at McAuley Aquatic Center.

The Golden Bears scored 1,027.5 points to finish behind seven-time defending champion Virginia and runner-up Stanford. Cal scored 163.5 points more than its fourth-place finish last year - its first in the ACC.

The week on the campus of Georgia Tech was highlighted by sophomore Mia West's individual championship in the 200-yard butterfly and three school records. West's winning time of 1:51.52 was the fourth-fastest in the country this season and No. 2 all-time at Cal.

The Bears got the week off to a blistering start, setting the school record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.29. Sophomore Mary-Ambre Moluh broke her own school standard in the 100 backstroke (49.64) to place third and freshman Elle Scott also established a program benchmark in the 100 breaststroke, clocking 58.19 to place sixth.

Cal finished the meet strongly Saturday, clocking the fourth-best time in program history and No. 6 nationally this season in the 400 freestyle relay with a mark of 3:08.58 by West, Moluh, Claire Weinstein and Teagan O'Dell. Moluh also placed fifth in the 100 free with a time of 46.87 No. 3 all-time at Cal and No. 8 in the country this season.

The Bears will now turn their attention to the 2026 NCAA Championships on March 18-21.
