I noticed that the #10 ranked Cal women had dropped 2 of their last 3 matches at home. Today the Bears lost to #16 Pepperdine, 4-2.

I checked our singles and doubles lineups and recognized that three of Cal's regulars were MIA. Today the #1 singles (Svendsen) & #4 singles (Lucchina) were out. They combine to make up the #2 doubles team. Also, Schomburg was absent from #3 doubles.

The team is young with ten players. Three freshmen, four sophs, two juniors & one senior. I noticed that Lucchina has been out since the USC victory in January so she might be injured. Svendsen missed her first competition this afternoon.

Does anyone know the status of any of these players? The team is doing quite well this season after the retirement of the HC and the graduation of two of its top players. Bears are 3-1 in the ACC.

I was wondering the exact same thing. Hopefully someone knows what's going on.

I don't have any specific info on current injuries, but I think Mao Mushika also had an issue in the fall. So yeah, the team is quite short handed right now.

At full strength, this team is definitely top 8, maybe top 5. Unlike in years past, the strength this year is at the top of the ladder. Johanne Svendsen gives them a #1 who can match up against anyone, and Berta and Mao have already proven themselves against top players.

Greta and Naomi would be great at 4 and 5 (but they've both been injured). Frosh Laura Cilekova has a lot of game but is up and down during a match right now. But she is getting experience playing up the ladder now, which will help her.

I'm actually impressed with their doubles. They've had so many changes, and yet are always competitive.

The interim women's coach discusses the health of the team without any specifics in the article above. Greta Lucchina was not mentioned, however. GO BEARS!

So, the starting lineup for CAL not in today?

Johanne Svendsen is not playing doubles or singles vs Va Tech today. Cal cannot often beat good teams without her skills. Bears lucked out and slipped by the Hokies, 4-3.
