I'd love to see Gavin Newsom become our 48th President!
For anybody looking for facts over feelings, I would say any of his environmental policies, compared to those of Trump.

I beg to differ. Having taught at three public high schools for almost twenty years (all in the Bay Area with diverse student populations), I would say the education provided ranged from "pretty good", to "very good". My two kids are in the 8th and 11th grade at a public school and I would say their education has been good-to-very-good.
No doubt there are poor-to-mediocre things going on somewhere in California education, but it has not been my experience.

48.8% of students in California meet the state standard in ELA.
37.3% of students in California meet the state standard in Math.
Is that your standard of "pretty good" to "very good"?
To be clear, this isn't an admonishment of teachers. As a teacher myself, we do the best we can with the resources we have but the system is broken in so many ways.

Just looking at those two statistics, without further study, I would have to say, no, that is not good, obviously.
But I was basing my evaluation instead on my own anecdotal evidence, amassed over time and at several different school sites in three different school districts. I trust my judgement of what I saw, especially based over decades, in different locations.
If you had the power, what would you do to improve public education in California?

That's fair and I appreciate your insight as a former teacher. I've been very luckily to have only worked in high performing schools in high performing areas as well. That being said, the emphasis on education from parents has diminished drastically during my time teaching. Students aren't disciplined or taught how to behave, both by parents and by administrators not holding kids and families accountable. Society as a whole struggles to have more than 15 minute attention spans and that is reflected in my students. Their ability to work hard has dipped, their ability to reason and problem solve has dipped. Even in an independent school, the focus is on money and behavior issues.
I don't have a solution, sadly. I think teachers should obviously be paid more, attracting more teachers to the field. I think administrators should be paid less and be held accountable for poor performance of their schools. I think parents need to focus more on their child's education and not on how to make them instagram famous.
What are your thoughts on how to make things better? I don't know how long you have been out of teaching but over the last 5 years, I have spent more time with behavior issues than I did in the previous 20 years combined.

I pretty much agree with all of that. It's hard to judge the job that schools are doing without taking into account family life and the extent (or lack thereof) to which society values education.
I switched from high school teacher to stay-at-home dad just before the pandemic.

You and the California legislature facilitated this fraud by handing out billions in tax dollars to these nonprofits with zero vetting and zero state oversight.
