"Another photograph, by Kenny Holston, captured the attention of Joe Kahn, our executive editor, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on China. I asked Joe to tell us what he saw in the image:

A day of stagecraft and ceremony. Xi receives Trump with his feet firmly planted on the red carpet, arm raised high in preparation for a handshake. Trump approaches with his arm held low and his palm open.

Both of these leaders choreograph meetings obsessively. So this is a moment. The American leader appearing deferential as China's leader welcomes him from a position of strength.

The substance of the summit is where we'll put the most emphasis. These ceremonial images matter as well."

Normal photo of a host receiving a guest. It would have been weird if it was the other way around.

China spends roughly 10x more on a vastly larger, more institutionalized global propaganda apparatus. Israel's recent spike is dramatic relative to its size and history but still much smaller in absolute terms.

  • Israel (2026): ~$730 million (focused, post-crisis surge).
  • China (annual): $710 billion+ (long-term, global scale via state media, diaspora networks, etc.).

Rumors are Trump is going to agree with Xi for China to invest up to $1 trillion in US-based factories in JVs with Chinese companies.

I think this is a good initiative by Trump, especially if it involves technology transfers, which would be taking a page out of China's playbook, ironically. It's interesting to see that this policy is being attacked from the right and the left here. If anything it will give the US more economic leverage over China.

What's the rationale as to why that's a bad thing?

Allowing China to build factories in the United States is seen as a bad idea by critics due to significant national security risks, economic displacement of domestic firms, and strategic dependencies on a geopolitical rival.

While some argue these investments could create jobs, opponents warn they may instead decimate existing U.S. industries through subsidized, non-market competition.

    National Security ConcernsCritical Infrastructure Risks:
Experts warn that Chinese-owned factories could be embedded in essential supply chains for telecommunications, energy, and water, potentially being "activated" for sabotage or espionage during a military crisis.

    Espionage & Data Theft:
Factories involved in high-tech sectors like Electric Vehicles (EVs) or biotech (e.g., BGI Group) are accused of stealing sensitive genetic data, intellectual property, and personal information.

    Proximity to Military Bases:
The U.S. government has strictly limited Chinese investment near sensitive military facilities to prevent surveillance.

    Technology Backdoors:
Modern industrial components often contain software or firmware that can be manipulated remotely to disrupt power grids or data centers.

    Economic and Strategic RisksMarket Displacement:

Critics argue that Chinese firms, backed by heavy state subsidies, can underprice domestic competitors, leading to an "extinction-level event" for U.S. companies in sectors like autos and solar power.

    Job Neutrality:

Some analysts note that allowing Chinese factories might not create net new jobs; it may simply shift existing manufacturing roles from American-owned firms to Chinese-owned ones as demand is finite.

    Supply Chain Traps:
Maintaining financial and technical links to Chinese parent companies can expose U.S.-based plants to Chinese legal pressure or export restrictions, complicating compliance with U.S. laws.

    Strategic Dependency:

Building local factories allows China to maintain its technological "foothold" in America, potentially hollowing out domestic R&D and engineering capabilities over time.

Recent Examples of FrictionGotion Michigan Plant:

A $2.4 billion EV battery factory project faced intense local protest and legal challenges over its links to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), leading to significant delays and controversy.

    Solar Factory Subsidy Risks:

U.S. solar installers and banks have begun pulling back from factories with Chinese ownership ties due to uncertainty over federal clean-energy subsidies and Treasury Department rules.

    Fuyao Glass Scrutiny:
Despite being a high-profile investor, Fuyao Glass America has faced Department of Homeland Security raids related to alleged illegal staffing and money laundering investigations.

Unlikely. Steel and glass technologies quickly are known worldwide because companies want to sell the equipment to produce them - it's a global market. As far as cars, China has taken the lead in electric car production, but thanks to US consumers love of $70K pickups and the Moron-in-Chief's energy policies, the electric car market here is sputtering.

    Call it protectionism!!

Neither Trump not Biden nor Obama want ford and GM going BK on their watch.

Americans are prouder than their ability to adapt to reality: Chinese cars are a better value for dollar spent.

    It translates to English as:

"No rush, everything has its measure."
or more naturally, "No hurry - I know what I'm doing."

It's a calm, deliberate phrase implying patience and control. In the context of the caricature, it humorously contrasts the poised demeanor of Xi Jinping with the inflated, balloon-like depiction of Donald Trump - suggesting restraint versus bluster.

Many folks here ignore President Trump regaining control of the Panama Canal, Venezuela, and Iran being hobbled. All a huge gut punch to the CCP Chinese.

There has been a substantial geopolitical reset that seems to diminish the role of Europe. Mercedes now looking to move into military manufacturing as the EU auto industry is being clobbered by Green Fantasies, disastrous energy planning (Trump was right), and Chinese EVs. Not to mention the immigration disaster.
