Sticking to an addiction seldom leads to a positive outcome. One problem with addictions is that one addiction often leads to others.
Tiger's first addiction was probably golf. Bobby Jones said a perfect round for him was hitting 6 good shots. Ben Hogan said a perfect round was hitting three shots which turned out exactly the way he planned.

In my opinion, Tiger's basic problem is that his father psychologically abused him by the way he raised him. He deprived him of having a normal childhood. He also provided a very bad example of being a husband. Certainly Tiger doesn't get a free "I'm a victim" pass but he has to have had a tougher time coping than those of us that had good parents and a pleasant childhood.
My guess is that Tiger is in chronic pain as a result of his misadventures and that he may have a pain med issue. I'm sure the pressure of trying to convince himself he is healthy enough to play in the Masters, when he knows he isn't, may have presently exacerbated the problem.
Like most elite athletes, he is self centered, so we know he spends zero time pondering the fact he could kill or maim others while driving impaired.
