We're really glad you're choosing Cal, Troy! Welcome to the family. GO BEARS!
The Bears picked up a big commitment today with the addition of Sutter Union DE/Edge Troy Bowens tonight on an unofficial visit to Cal.
The 6-4/255 Bowens is a consensus 4 star recruit as well as the #12 Edge (Rivals) in the nation.
“Tosh started recruiting me when he was at Oregon as the defensive
coordinator and he actually offered me at Oregon,” Bowens said. “Oregon was my second offer and they offered me over a year ago now and since then, Tosh has been my favorite coach. Just everything about Tosh is great, and since he's gotten the opportunity to become the head coach at Cal, it's really opened my eyes up.
“I've been down to Cal numerous of times, and everything has always stood out to me, especially the coaches. He's also brought coaches down from Oregon to Cal. And Cal is only about like an hour and a half away.
“I really like Cal. I met the players. They're awesome. Coaches have just absolutely loved me. I've went there today, and I've experienced how their practice has actually been.
“I have an official visit locked in May 28 to the 31st.
“Cal is just absolutely amazing and I'm I really trust in Tosh and the coaches to build me to the best person I can be.”
The All-State DE has been on campus several times this year already, including Premier Day and the relationship with the Cal staff continued to grow, culminating in his commitment today.
Bowens totaled 106 tackles, 13 sacks, 31 QB pressures, 3 forced fumbles and 3 passes defending in helping lead Sutter to the state finals before falling to Barstow in the 4A championship game.

A versatile athlete, Bowens played receiver as a freshman and also plays tight end and punts. He also plays basketball for Sutter as well as competing in track and field in the discus and shot put.
The Bears beat out Oregon, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Michigan Stanford, UCLA and more for Bowens’ services. He becomes the fifth commitment for the Bears’ 2027 recruiting class, joining fellow edge Giovanni Hodge (Grant Union), Arizona LB Gunnar Perry, Texas WR Blake Gunter and IMG kicker Zach Brien.
