forcey, as sycasey points out, it's extremely unlikely that a transfer portal commitment will flip (it's not like high school recruiting) which is probably a function of it being only a 15 day speed dating window & the spring academic instruction starting in berkeley on january 20th...the monster cannot recall any bears decommitments since the transfer portal era started

The portal window is a window for players to enter and be "officially" contacted. But players can and do wait to decide on their next program after the window closes.

Teams want the players to commit and sign during the portal window so they can be on campus and part of the program for the Spring period. S&C, Spring practices, immersion into the team culture and acclimating to a new campus, teammates and classes.

But there is no reason they cannot simply leave their current program and join another program whenever they want.

Am i correct in thinking that they have to be enrolled in school to engage the athletic program and therein lies the rub? As others have noted, if the CFP ended before the start of classes, all this angst would be eliminated.

Absolutely, Berkeley was a tough sell for him from the beginning, Washington State was his other choice.

However, for many, Berkeley is a huge plus with no other school/location really comparable. The key is having coaches that love Berkeley and can sell Berkeley and can identify TOP players for whom Berkeley will be a selling point. That sure seems to be Tosh's direction.

Story #2. My daughter went to a college recruiting event when we lived in SD. It was 5 or 6 ACC schools. All of the reps talked about their school and academics. Clemson sent a heavy set, older southern "boy". He talked about fishin' and muddin' and everything except academics. We laugh to this day about his "presentation."
