Weird game of streaks, thought it would be a lot closer once Dort left the game.

I thought we should have had Camden more involved on the offensive side late in the game, but it worked out fine.

F Furd! Bears Win!

Our droughts during games are annoying but when we are firing, going from down 16 to being up as much as 15 (a 30 point turnaround), we can make a run in March if we can play like that a full 40 minutes

I was just glazing Madsen last week. This is fireable.

Furd watched some film and came with a plan. We have no answer and are playing like we don't feel like playing basketball today. Horrendous, lazy, sloppy, pathetic basketball.

lol that didn't age well. Or did we just fire Madsen in the parking lot?

We're gonna need Dort if we want any hope of sniffing the tourney.

The turning point was when we were up 12 and had a breakaway and threw it away. We were about to bury them. This team has to learn how to bone up and slam the damn door. Lazy on loose balls. Bunch of dumb 3pt bombs and they're right back in it. Okorie is going to start hitting shots, too.

Nope. He went 1-16…..

He was fired, and rehired at least twice this game. Lyons was drowning with his paperwork throughout the game.

Madsen should have called TO during that long run, halfway through the half and still all his TO left, doesn't make sense not to.

Madsen waited until Stanford's run reached 15-2 before he called timeout. SMH.

Stanford has the better coach and recruiter. But hey, we have a coach who is really really tall and played in the NBA.

This didnt age well. Lol

From what I've read here, if he was better at the all important timeout strategy, we win by 20 instead of 12. Maybe we should dump him.

What's your vendetta with Madsen. You're treating him like Wilcox. Just complaints all the time

That 15-2 run without timeouts was pretty unnerving tbh, but yeah, overreaction.

This take might come as a shocker on this board, but....Cal is a way better team than LS Junior U. They just are. Top to bottom (I see Dai Dai and Okorie as a wash, and the Okpara and Petraitis injuries as a wash). So it's gratifying that they took care of business tonight. This doesn't mean that Cal won't lose when Stanford comes to Cal, or that Cal isn't capable of going on a frustrating multi-game losing streak. But the talent PLUS coaching seem to side clearly with Cal this year. That makes it especially curious that the ACC network talk was all about Stanford and the bubble. As other posters have mentioned, ACC doesn't have a dog in the fight yet, so not sure why no one on the broadcast mentioned the obvious--Cal is just more talented as a whole.

Stanford has had better wins and was indeed closer to the bubble. That may change as more games are played.

Okorie is an incredibly inconsistent player, looked like an all-American last week and a washout tonight.

it was a comment based on the situation. I said I was just glazing Madsen a week ago. Maybe you don't understand what that means? Now we come out flat and pooped the bed and played like crap. That's when I made the comment. Madsen did a great job from there (as did the team) and we won a great game. Where was your critique in the moment? Yes. We went from not being prepared and unconscionably looking like crap, to looking like the opposite. I stand by my comment (at the time). It was a pathetic start. The worst of the year. But it was one of the best games of the year.

wonder if the pressure (public) got to him. Expectations were high. But we also locked him down really well. In general, furd had a terrible shooting night. Some of that was our own pressure but we also got lucky. We still have to rebound better. And Madsen needs to call timeouts earlier in the momentum swings.

We could have hired Kyle Smith at any of our last three openings, including our last one when people here made up a story about WSU being Smith's "dream job" that he would never leave so no point in inquiring.

I agree with that Cal looked like the better team. I think Cal has historically always been too one-dimensional, depending on a Stojakovic or a Jaylen Brown. You can clearly see several reliable scorers who can create on this year's team - Pippen, Ames, and Camden. What I think is particularly interesting this year are a few tough matchups - Camden plays as a big SF who can board, I don't remember the last time I've seen that combo for us. Dai Dai seems like a more controlled Randle. Pippen gives me flashes of Jaylen Brown's smoothness though more raw. Dort looks like a monster on the court regardless of who is guarding him. Pippen and Camden were tough matchups for Furd today. This is a solid team, hopefully we can build.

I do think Madsen seems better coached. It feels like greater discipline, much stronger FT% which I think often is a coaching influence. I do think some of his TOs were stretching my own comfort but what the hell do I know - Madsen is winning this year. I think we could have won the Duke game but if he keeps at this pace, I think we can make a case for the tourney. Exciting times.

the difference was our defense, especially Pippin who locked him down

his big game vs UNC was as much to do with their poor defense as they put no pressure on the ball and just let him get to any spot he wanted

Our strategy was to blitz him and put Pippin on him when ever he was on the court

Seems like a pretty good strategy. Good thing we didn't fire the coach at the third time out in the first half.

I thought you might be too embarrassed to post after some of those completely off-the-reservation - just plain wrong - comments about the team and Madsen in the 1st half.
This win wasn't "lucky" and the timing of timeouts might be the least important aspect of coaching at this level.
Give Camden his due credit for an outstanding night, the team due credit for showing resilience in the face of a hostile crowd when down 16, and Madsen due credit for 16 wins before we hit February. This team is going places.

I didn't say our win was lucky. We got lucky that Okorie missed so many shots. And stanfurd in general missed a lot of open looks. But we also played great d. If you're looking for an apology for me getting emotional about Madsen after singing his praises a week ago only to be severely let down at a low point in the next game, that's fine. I apologize. But sir, this is a basketball fan board. You can make emotional comments when your team completely collapses before your eyes. And honestly, this platform makes it hard to interpret intentions, but i feel like most common sense BI posters understand I didn't think our win was due to luck, and would agree that in addition to playing good d, we were fortunate that furd also shot poorly. Go Bears.

They shot poorly is generous, especially with what Okorie shot.

You have to give credit to Cal's staff for holding a top 10 national scorer at 1 for 16 shooting. So yes, Cal coaches had a plan and it worked. That's not getting lucky.

B&G, I know I don't have a life for doing this - but I counted 7 times you made in-game posts throughout the game, all negative. Three in the first half, four in the second half. always during a bad stretch. All critical. Great run at the end of the first half, nothing offered by you. Didn't we win the game by 12 points?

Maybe the issue isn't that you're being too emotional, but rather that all of your emotional statements are to criticize the coach and the team.. (BTW, please consider this response as an "emotional" comment.)

It is a thing of beauty and would be so good to see them do more of. We seem like we have done decently for how poorly we rebound in getting back on transition D but I would love to see Bell and Camden do more of that.

Agreed, we all have first amendment rights to post emotional targeted critiques of the coach, and an equal right to be annoyed by the frequency and irrelevance of the content.
As a "common sense BI poster" it should be clear to you that the game-day negativity DURING the game annoys more than a few. Maybe just a little consideration for those who want to root the team on for two hours instead of reading another massacre Madsen post. Try packing the 7-post emotional coach critique into one post and save it for after the buzzer.
The Florida teams await us, I like our chances for two more wins, but Miami will be tough. Go Bears!

I understand that all this is is a site to talk about basketball. And yes, everybody has the right to express their emotions, I get it.

But it seems strange to me that anyone would want to make such drastic comments within the 40 minutes of a basketball game. Watch almost any game of a non-top 20 team and within it you're gonna see some really good stuff and some really bad stuff. But as a poster with my own emotions/reactions, I really have a problem when someone consistently has something to say when things are going bad, but during a nice bit of basketball like last night's final 5 of the first half, that same poster literally disappears from commenting. And that in turn becomes annoying where my emotions are concerned. I would think I'm not alone here.
