I think you guys got it wrong
UNC was without their best player (who played in the game where we beat them)
Wright State gave Virginia a scare, but we beat Wright State by 10
VCU, Santa Clara, Miami (Ohio), Alabama, Texas were all bubble teams and just squeaked in.
We were right there and could advanced in the NCAA just like any of these teams.
Also shows that there are teams who didn't get selected that could have made some noise in the tournament
VCU actually won the A-10. If they had not they may have squeaked in as an at large. Alabama is a 4 seed so I would not put categorize their selection as squeaking in. Texas? Yes. They had 14 losses.
SMU is the team I would say benefitted the most on Selection Sunday. They were fading down the stretch and apparently advised the committee that injured guard BJ Edwards would play. He did not. NC State also faded late and could easily have been replaced by a number of teams.
The last 4 teams in and the next 8 out are all pretty similar with not a lot to distinguish one from another. Any of them could have been in and done as well of better than the teams that were selected. The NET ranking seemed to play an oversized role in the selections. It is easy to lean on the NET to avoid controversy. This year there was very little real controversy. But I am less certain they got the best 37 at large teams right at the end.
How you are playing needs to matter a bit more than it did IMO. SMU and NC State limped in and then lost the play in games. But the major competitors for the final slots did not finish well either.
