Have been looking at Virginia Tech stats and nothing really stands out. No preseason all-ACC players. But they were picked for tenth in the conference and are now in sixth. And they have won 8 of their last 10 games. One thing they do have is a coach, Megan Duffey, who has had a 68.9% overall winning percentage at Miami of Ohio, Marquette and now VaTech. So this may be most of all an interesting coaching battle. Two coaches who are maxing out the potential of their teams and preparing well for their opponents.

Taylor was on the bench cheering on her teammates wearing a smile.....She was not wearing a brace, unless it was not visible. She is taller then I had previously noticed. Here's Hoping she can return to the court soon! Puff played very well wearing a brace. It's good to see them recover from injuries.....Kudos to the training staff.

Taylor walked around the floor in the postgame procession with no discernible limp. Hope that means she'll be back soon.

Creme's bracketology has us, Uva, VT as all on the bubble. Let's win on Sunday!

I finally did find one VaTech stat that helps explain their success. They are fifth in opponent scoring average, and in all 19 of their wins, they have held their opponent below 70. So we will have to be grinding it on the offensive end.

I know that NET is a primary measuring tool of the selection committee, but I can't help but be a little irked by furd still "in" on Creme's bubble while we're out. I know they beat UNC and we didn't, but recently they were beat decisively by Notre Dame and Georgia Tech, two teams that we handled. And head to head I don't see anything that indicates that they are better than us. Really hoping for a victory Sunday coupled with a Virginia win over furd.

I agree that Stanford's ranking in comparison to ours is suspect, but I do think a name, like Stanford's in women's basketball, is important in the bubble talk. It can be a deciding factor and somehow can put a team ahead of another, despite in this case, Tara being gone now.

Quite frankly, I'd like to see Cal win out.

And they can.

But they will need to play a high level game tomorrow against Va Tech.

Then go east and beat those two. On paper, Cal is better than Miami and FSU. However, they have to DO IT.

Then it's back for Clemson and SMU.

That would be 21 wins. Beating solid teams like VA, Va Tech and Clemson should help.

Might even need to get a game in the conference tournament.

But you have to get the Va Tech game tomorrow, first and foremost.

The problem is how many points did they give up in their losses. I think the pace of the game has more to do with the score than the defense. We gave up our most points (except for the overtime game at Syracuse) in a win over Pitt. They scored 80 but we scored 95. We gave up low 70. scores to Vandy and Louisville. Va. Tech gave up scores in the 80's in their losses.

With all the NET ranking and other criteria availabe, if this is still the case (maybe it is, maybe not), then it really sucks big time. The point you are making here is the very reason I posted the complaint in the first place.

I think 5-1 gets us into the tournament (as long as one of those L's are against Clemson/VA Tech).

4- 2 and we're going to need to make some noise in the ACC Tournament.

ethan0l

I think this is right. Especially since if we are 5-1, we finished incredibly strong. What would we be, finishing on an 11-2 streak? Even 4-2 looks good there but I bet our NET wouldn't be great.

I want to post something to Next Door; does anyone know whether general-admission seats for VA Tech start at $15, or is it less for kids? Cal's Web site makes the most basic info difficult to find.

When I clicked on general admission in the seat map - this popped up:

General Admission Adult
$18.00/ea

General Admission Senior (65+)
$15.00/ea

General Admission Youth (2-17)
$15.00/ea

You'd think seniors and little kids would be discounted..

I buy a Senior pass for the entire season for around $50, includes every home. My general admission ticket(65+) for tomorrow's game has $3.00 printed on it. St. Mary's College tickets are $15...

Bleacher Nation predicts Cal will win 68-67...not sure if my heart can take it.

Draftkings has Cal still at 40000-1 to win the NCAA tournament, and VT at 50000-1. So there!

Re: NCAA tournament and NET and Stanford: Stanford's "name" means something to Charlie Creme, but not to to the NET and eventual selection committee. Stanford went to the WBIT last year, and lost in the first round to Portland at home, after being demolished in the ACC tournament by 14th seeded Clemson, 63-46. The Committee, if they are to remember anything about Stanford, will remember that.

Last night during the pregame show on ABC for the South Carolina-LSU wbb game, they showed the NCAA's first early reveal of the top 16 seeds.

The hosts kept repeating what the NCAA has said will be a key determining factor for who gets in and who does not this season. "Head-to-head matchups"!!

Again, maybe or maybe not. I thought Creme and Lunardi would try to emulate the selection committees by using the same criteria that they are using.
And yes, what Creme predicts in the long run is completely irrelevant. And then evidently it's been noted here that we will be better off today if furd beats Virginia. All I know (and I'm sure you'd agree) is that watching the Women furd play - they are nothing special.

Yeah, slow start. Like how they tried to establish Walker early on, but gotta watch those entry/lobs - VT is doubling/tripling when they see that ball come in

Defenses are dominating, 13-12. Cal has yielded two layups on inbound plays to Baker & Wenzel. Why would Bears play Grace McCallop? She shot an airball and gave up a layup to Nelson. At halftime, VT starting to take over the game. Their guards can get open for pullup jumpers whereas Cal cannot free up their guards. Hokie guards are outscoring the Bear guards, 21-9. Suffren & Daley are 7-10 from the field. Their guards are faster and no Cal guard has more than a single basket. Sheppard has been invisible on offense and is scoreless. Lulu Twidale cannot shake Suffren or Daley. Puff Morris has three turnovers and two of her three trey attempts were off-line (not close).

For Cal to win, Twidale, Maul & Sheppard need to score in the second half. Morris needs to play better as the PG Bear guards are 1 for 8 from three-point land. They have hit double-digit treys lately. Walker & Ojukwu are doing their part on the boards and scoring.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I disagree with Walker & Ojukwu sitting out for a long period in the 3rd with 3 PFs each. They had better be in in the final quarter if Cal wants to win. Bears are 1-13 from distance. Coach puts lineup of McCallop, Donez, Langarita, Morris & Maul in and Hokies pull away easily to a dozen point lead. Who is going to score other than Maul? Both Walker & Sheppard fouled out but she did not put in Ojukwu or Twidale for offense. No rebounding because Ojukwu was not put in the game. Langarita cannot board. Ojukwu is tied for Cal's high scorer with 11 points in only 15 minutes of PT. Charmin Smith decides to inject Ojukwu back into the game with 2:49 left. Are you kidding me?

Worst game management that I have witnessed. The VT HC had a superior game plan to shut down Cal's guards. Sheppard held to no baskets while Twidale & Maul each made one. Final: Hokies 68, Bears 58. MVP is soph SG Suffrin with 19 points and completely shut down Lulu (4 points) Twidale was forced into 7 turnovers and Cal's team had 22 TOs. VT's defense won the game.

This doesn't seem to be the game in which we should be changing up our lineup and style of play. Need to get Walker back in and get Maul in the flow.
kc1121
How long do you want to ignore this user?
yeah, but you don;t walk Walker to pick up #3 also.

those 2-3 entry passes to Ojukwu were bad.

Suffren killed them with the mid range game during that run
