Scanlon was pretty consistent last year but other than 1 time ..she has been inconsistent considering this is her sole event.

Off-topic but interesting how women's gymnastics is viewed and treated by universities

https://collegegymnews.com/2026/03/04/opinion-there-is-no-right-way-to-cut-a-gymnastics-program-but-there-is-a-wrong-way/

Also any Iowa State gymnastics that Cal can target in the portal?

The competition with Boise State may not have been great, but Cal finally broke through the 197 threshhold.
Highest floor scoe of the year - 49.450 (three 9.9 and 2 9.875) Beam's 49.225 about where Cal has been placing, beam tied for third highest of the year 49.425 and vault is vault.
Cal was able to overcome an individual low score on vault, bars and beam - which is a good sign.
Next week are two meets to close out the regular season.
Will check the NQS rankings on Monday. f I did the math right, Cal's NQS is up to 196.591 (it had been 196.539). Clemson moves up to 196.611. Minnesota moves up to 196.834 so while Cal's NQS increased, Cal will not pass the two schools just ahead - Clemson and Minnesota. Minnesota has a bunch of 197s.

I watched the entire meet, and the team is improving steadily. For the postseason, the team needs to score 198 or higher. Several Bears are registering 9.9 scores now so hope springs eternal. GO BEARS!

Don't think last year's senior-laden, uber talented squad hit 198 once last season. The goal for the postseason is to be competitive and maybe catch a break or two. As long as this squad keeps trending upward, this should be considered a successful season.

No doubt this is a successful season with a new coaching staff and losing our top four All-Arounders from last season. Two graduated and two transferred. You're correct. I was debating whether this year's team has the talent for the postseason. GO BEARS!

This year's women's team is unbelievably talented and young in terms of college experience. Their performance this year is way above expectations and I'm extremely proud of how they have performed. Especially since they lost Ondine Achampong, the British national champion to an ACL injury just before the season started. Ondine was arguably Cal's #1 gymnast headed into this season.

But this team has really risen to the challenge. Their scores have improved in virtually each meet this season they have been able to cover when one player has fayktered & scored poorly in a routine. Cal has performed well and defeated some very good teams who were rated above them in head to head competition including North Carolina, Clemson & Stanford. Best of all, unlike last season where Cal lost 4 of their top performers, this year's team is full of top performers who are freshman, sophomores and juniors and should be even better next year as virtually all of Cal's top performers return. The only thing I don't know is who Cal is recruiting for next year and when they will know about commits from the incoming freshman class.

Gerelan Stack-Eaton & staff have done a great job in working with this team and it was an awesome move to hire last year's Cal stalwarts, Mya Lauzon & Maddy Williams as asst. coaches which I believe helped maintain and build on the culture that was already established in Berkeley.

https://calbears.com/news/2025/11/13/womens-gymnastics-cal-womens-gymnastics-signs-4-recruits.aspx

From Nov 2025 .... Hajjar is already with the team as a spring enrollee. Looks like she is redshirting. She like Ondine and Tonya is very experienced at the international elite level. Should give Cal an experienced 1-2-3 of internationals once Ondine is healthy.

Holt and Thomas aren't ranked. Holt is a 3 star.

Lucy Eanes is also said to be joining. Don't think she is ranked. Jade Gola also said to be joining and not ranked. Ellen Rausa also joining and not ranked.

Lots of new gymnasts for next year's squad. Maybe no superstar recruits but all level 10 gymnasts. Cal has a small squad compared to others so maybe there will be another add or two. I do wonder if someone from Iowa State will be targeted in transfer portal.

Thank you for this information JT.

Do you have any idea how this class of gymnasts recruits compares with the classes of other top schools around the country or even how it compares with other schools in the ACC like Clemson and North Carolina?

Tonya Paulsson is a powerhouse as is Annalise Newman-Achee in the All Around. If Achampong can make another ACL comeback she alone will be a great addition to next year's team as there is a ton of returning talent. Hope Hajjar can provide that third top notch international touch to the program.

Cal's NQS is 196.591 (my math was right) but alas, Cal slipped to 16th as Auburn steped up to 15 from 17 and from 196.464 to 196.603 with last weeks meet score of 197.200 which gives them two 197+ scores that now count..
Clemson at 14 and 196.644 (I must have mistyped!)
Minnesota at 13 and 196.834 - unlikley to be caught by Cal.

Ohio State is behind Cal at 196.504.
On events, Cal is now ranked 10 on Bars (unchanged), 20 on Vault (up 1), 20 on Beam (up 1) and 25 on Floor (up 2).
Cal has two home meets this weekend and hopefully just keeps building up higher and higher scores.

Missed the tri-meet with San Jose and the Junior University:
Per CalBears, it was the second highest team score of the season 197.075 which will nw go into the NQS numbers.
Highest floor of the season 49.500. it's a straight line improvement!
Paulsson, without a 10 on bars, is fourth in the nation.
Attendance was 2311, highest of the home meets this year.

Bars and Beam team scores are erratic. Up and down. Cal just hasn't had the consistency from meet to meet.

https://roadtonationals.com/results/teams/ch_consistency_t/2026/15

Final home meet of the year is Sunday.

Was there last night. Kind of surprise of the listed 2311 attendance. Thought it seem smaller. Only 3 tuba in the straw hat band. Yes consistency is the problem..not enough 9.9 scores to offsets the 9.7s. San Jose has a pretty good team too. Which I could go to senior day.

Cal pulled together over the last three events to overcome Washington after a horrific start on the vault. It was the team's second highest score of the season. Congratulations, seniors!
ncbears

Last home meet attendance is listed as 2471 and a season average of 2100.

Cal has moved up to #14 with an NQS of 196.698 ahead of Clemson (#15) NCState (#20) and UNC has dropped to #22. The Junior University is at #7. Side note: the Junior University averaged 2938 for their home meets.

National ranking rose a bit - Bars #9 (up 1), Beam #18 (up 2) Vault #21 (down 1) and Floor up 3 to #22. Bears seem to be mostly getting better and scoring higher as they head east for the ACC Championships. Cal is solidly placed for being in the postseason:

From the NCAA website "The championship provides for a field of 36 teams determined based on their national qualifying score. Teams 1-16 are seeded by the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Committee and the remaining teams are placed geographically at one of the four regional sites."

Regional sites are LSU (currently #2), Oregon State (currently #25) , Kentucky (currently #19) and Arizona State (currently #31).

Bears Win Cal Quad Meet On Senior Day - California Golden Bears Athletics

This photo is interesting because it shows the reserves cheering at the top. Is Ondine Achampong in the picture? Is she the one standing all the way to the left? If so, she's slenderer than I remember from last season. I hope that she'll return for next season.

Yes that looks like Ondine in the grey shirt.

from what I have observed Ondine loves Cal. She has spoken to the international relevance of UC Berkeley. I don't see her transferring anywhere else.

Especially since she has been practically out for two season ..I would think she will have to prove to all she has recovered.

Yup Ondine was gonna shine at that 2024 Olympics. Too bad she got injured. She put off coming to Cal for a couple of years to train for the Olympics. Ondine is a badass.

Hopefully she is able to perform at a high level before she graduates from Cal. If anything, maybe she brings some more Brits to Cal.

Bears will go bars, beam, floor and vault. Seems tough starting with best event when judge scores may be less as they leave room for later routines

Going to the vault, Cal leads the competition - but Stanford is on floor.
Cal's top team score on vault was 49.275. That would lead the apparatus for this competition.

Clemson is in second going to bars. Cal scored 49.325 on bars and Clemson, while it's their top ranked event, has not hit that number all season. Still, it's not about event rankings - it's whether Clemson's bars will outscore Cal's vault - and .. well, Cal's vault just may not be high enough. (There's only been one 9.90 so far at the meet)

and then, there's Stanford on floor. where they likely will put a 49.400 or so score, which could be enough to overtake all.

That does not look likely at this point - 9.85 but Paulsson has big hop and a 9.70 - Silvers with 9.80, and Cal's start values just aren't that high..
But Clemson is hitting their bars routines....
And Stanford is building their floor scores....

ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
welp. WIley was anchor position and she didn't do well enough. 9.80 for a team score of 49.100. Not great - not bad. It's second highest team score on the event for the meet.

Cal finishes with a team score of 196.900

And Clemson has passed Cal. And it's likely Stanford will pass Cal as well.
ncbears
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And Clemson wins it with their 49.450 on bars - top team score on the event - (some generous scores to Stanford's final two floor performances). For what it's worth, even a 49.300 on vault for the Bears would not have been enough, even if top team score for the year and for this meet.

Clemson 197.100 - the Howells earned their salaries
Stanford 197.075 - their poor vault done them in - (48.800)
Cal - 196.900
NCS - 196.500

A little disappointing as Cal had been progressing - prior to this meet, Cal's last three scores (admittedly home meets) were
197.225
197. 075 and
197.175
so to drop to 196.900 is a bit disappointing.
This was Clemson's second 197 of the season - so they hit at the right time. Last week's 197.175 was the first.

Our super frosh Tonya Paulsson was the all-around champ & had the highest score on the uneven bars! Congrats to all the Bears!
JTfromClash
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Agreed it seemed like the squad was peaking at the right time. They just didnt bring if all together yesterday. They need a huge floor and it didnt happen. Thought a couple of routines were underscored. Sounds like Clemson might have had some home cooking in the scoring.

Hope they rebound for the NCAAs. Paulsson has a good shot of individually putting numbers that might have her in contention for some titles. But it is really a warm up for next year. A healthy Ondine and Hajjar fully incorporated into the team is adding so much talent. So im rooting for this years squad to do well and gain invaluable experience that may lead to bigger and better things next year

Cal is in the Tempe Regional.
Thursday, April 2.

Florida #3
Georgia #6
Michigan State #11
Cal #14

and
Penn State (20)
BYU (24)
Southern Utah (28)

Arizona State (32) (a home meet!) v. Arizona (33)

So, Cal will see eMjae Frazier again.
First round will have Cal fighting with Penn State and the winner between Arizona and Arizona State to advance to the Regional Final with Florida. Barring a total collapse by Florida.

Penn State could be tough - their top score is 197.250 and their NQS is 196.470. Although they only got 196.000 at the Big10 Championships.

Cal's top score is 197.225 and NQS is 196.716. Cal had had three consecutive 197s before just missing last week at the ACC championships.

So Cal v. Penn State should be the battle to get to the Regional Final.
