Sadly, 90% of the ski resorts closed down in March before that first big storm hit earlier this month.

Mammoth and Pallisades Tahoe are the only one's I know of that are open.

Heavenly re-opened last weekend.

SF is on track for the wettest April in Bay Area since 2018.

So blessed to have Whole Foods here in the Valley with great produce and beer!
Instead of the typical low-quality items offered at Von's, Ralph's or Safeway.

When I was in college I knew Billy Killebrew, who inherited ownership of Heavenly Valley at age 23 when his father Hugh died in a private plane crash in 1977.

Yes, they died near Echo Summit.
Billy took over the resort and sold it to the Japanese in 1990.
A group that already had bought Steamboat Springs. Billy stayed on as GM.

Seniors should not be exempt from property taxes for school improvements. Part of maintaining a good local neighborhood means having good local public schools, even if you don't have school aged children that will be attending. And if you can't afford those property taxes, then sell your house, take the profits, and become a renter.

66% of the Lafayette School District's funding comes from the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) as opposed to the Basic Aid Funding Model.

As a result, the Town has to repeatedly put Parcel Tax increases on the ballot to fund the "gap" in funding.

For example, Measures J&B in 2014.
Measure L in 2020.

Now Measure H in 2026.

And of course, such a tax requires a two-thirds supermajority.

A lot are already " exempt" by virtue of having owned and stayed in a house a long time under prop 13, plus- under new regulations- they can transfer their current basis if they move and buy and occupy a new place. Enough of the old whiners, they have it made. It's younger homeowners who are screwed.

I don't know how anyone would be "exempt" based on Prop. 13.
Seniors still have to pay property taxes.

The ability to transfer your basis is nothing new.
It was based on Prop. 60 and Prop. 90 for homeowners age 55 and older.

Prop. 60 was passed back in 1986.

For base year value transfers, Propositions 60 and 90 allowed homeowners age 55 and older to carry their property tax base to a replacement home, but with tight restrictions. The transfer could only happen once in a lifetime, the replacement home had to cost the same or less than the original, and Proposition 60 limited the transfer to the same county. Proposition 90 allowed cross-county transfers, but only if the destination county had opted in by ordinance, and many counties never did.

Prop. 19 was passed in 2020 and took effect on April 1st, 2021:
It allowed for a property tax base to be transferred to a replacement home anywhere in the state.

With the following criteria:

  • Homeowners aged 55 or older at the time they sell the original property
  • Severely and permanently disabled homeowners
  • Victims of wildfire or natural disaster as declared by the governor
Seniors and disabled homeowners can use this transfer up to three times. Wildfire and disaster victims have no cap on the number of transfers.3

Meanwhile, a former San Jose City Councilman (Rishi Kumar) is trying to get enough signatures to put a proposition on the ballot in November to exempt seniors > 60 of property taxes

Cult musician playing rebranded Cal Shakes venue on Friday:

Jonathan Richman (featuring Tommy Larkins on drums) will perform on Friday, June 5, 2026, at 8:00 PM. The concert marks the opening night for the inaugural season of the Siesta Valley Bowl, which is the rebranded name for the former California Shakespeare Theater (Cal Shakes) amphitheater in Orinda.

* Richman's work with the first incarnation of Modern Lovers is a major influence on punk rock. One critic called him the "Godfather of Punk". Wikipedia

His signature song, Roadrunner, followed by Greg Kihn's
able cover posted below. I always really dug the song.

As I recall, CAL used to have Greg Kihn play in Lower Sproul Plaza during lunchtime circa '79 - '80
He also played there the night before the Big Game.

I saw him at one of those frats on Bancroft when I was in law school in the late 70's (Hastings, but I lived in Berkeley).
I dug him as a DJ.* Great stories and good music selection. He died from complications of Alzheimer's at age 75 in 2024.

* From 1996 through 2012, Kihn was a morning radio disc jockey (DJ). He did wake-ups for KUFX, a Bay Area classic rock radio station.Wikipedia

* He once said that Joe Satriani was in his band for a bit and while the rest of the band was out partying when they were on tour, Joe stayed in the hotel room practicing.

I lived at A-E-Phi on Channing Circle my last quarter in the Fall of '82
Across from ADPi and the Fiji's.

One evening I heard a live band playing "Two Tickets to Paradise" from across the street.
I couldn't believe how good it sounded.

I went downstairs and walked across Piedmont and took a peak into the living room and sure enough it was EDDIE MONEY playing at a Little Sister Party at some small frat.

Apparently, someone in the frat knew the bass player.

Terrific Guitar Solo by Jimmy Lyon who played a lot of small gigs in the Central Valley.
He was a prodigy discovered by Bill Graham. Lyon went to San Leandro High.

Became a member of the Greg Kihn band
in the early 90's.

Song hit #22 on the Billboard Charts in September of 1978

Eddie played a party at my frat in '75. I gave him the check ($500). He was professional, a gentleman and he killed it that night.

Eddie played a surprise concert at my high school (Campolindo). I think 1985. I was long gone by then.

The Dead played at Campo also in the 60's.

I read the definitive Dead book, A Long Strange Trip and was surprised to see they played at Las Lomas in 1960's.
