It was a thrilling experience last night to attend the NorCal premiere of "Melania" on the BIG screen at that historic movie palace, the Grand Lake in Oakland! The theater owner of the Grand Lake has always been one to eschew the political partisanship that is so prevalent in the SF/Oakland/Berkeley area.

I knew people would be dressed up for this great event, so I rented some formal wear at the shop a few blocks away. As I entered the theater, a protester attempted to squirt some apple cider vinegar on me, but I deftly dodged him.

The theater was packed and all attendees -- regardless of political persuasion -- seemed to feel a kinship with one another. Before the curtain came up, there was a lot of conversation amongst heretofore strangers. I asked several people what brought them out to see this, and the consensus answer was something like, "Melania is so beautiful and classy, but we know so little about her! She's almost like the 'mystery FLOTUS'; who wouldn't want to know more?"

I love the Grand Lake! You know they have an organist, just like back in the good ol' days! One of my favorite moments last night was when he segued into "YMCA", which added to everyone's lighthearted and happy mood!

The movie itself is an instant classic! Ken Burns can only wish he had thought of making something like this... if he could. Rather than give away any details, since I know you'll all be going, let me just cut to some of the reactions after the movie...

"I never thought an Oaklander like me would love a movie like this -- and a First Lady -- so much!!!"

"It was so great to learn about this charming lady's life! What a rags-to-riches tale, growing up in Slovenia and now soon to be the belle of the National Ballroom! Is 'Melania' perhaps Slovenian for 'Cinderella'?

"They just don't write and direct movies like this anymore! I was rivetted to my seat. Oscars await!"

"I never liked that Donald Trump, but now I need to acknowledge: Anybody who can win Melania's hand, well, he must have a lot going for him!"

But my favorite was the lady who just uttered (with a wink and a smile), "I really don't care. Do u?"

All I can say is, this is a film you don't want to miss! Get dressed up! Bring your friends and family! You won't regret it!

Again, $8 mil this weekend is already a win for documentaries. Documentaries aren't made to recoup costs nor are they expected to.

If this project is suppose to appear legitimate by comparing it to the standards and practices that govern the documentary film industry, you may want to research what type of numbers are involved with that.

Another critical point that doesn't require much in the way of cognitive ability goes right over a Trump supporters head. I guess they've never heard of a "pay for play" transaction? Or is it business as usual for these people and they just don't care?

I wouldn't post on this topic at all if I hadn't seen TDS afflicted folks inaccurately portray the documentary as something nobody wanted to see. I felt compelled to correct those completely wrong takes. Unfortunately, TDS folks can't accept reality so it has been a bit of back and forth.

People actually choose to watch this? Even another mindless Princess Diana movie seems better.

Even the folks like me who were enthralled by this wonderful documentary about the charming, fascinating Melania Trump gotta admit that that critic's line "Even if they showed this on a plane, people would still walk out" is one of the all-time great lines. So great that it almost has to have been used before, though it was the first time I'd heard it.
