ABC News: U.S. law enforcement alert warns Iran may be activating sleeper cells
A federal government alert sent to U.S. law enforcement agencies warned that Iran may have activated sleeper cells following the death of then-supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, ABC News reported on Monday.
According to the report, the United States intercepted encrypted communications shortly after Khamenei's death, which may serve as "an operational trigger" for "sleeper assets" outside the country.
"The intercepted transmission was encoded and appeared to be destined for 'clandestine recipients' who possess the encryption key, the kind of message intended to impart instructions to 'covert operatives or sleeper assets' without the use of the internet or cellular networks," ABC News reported, adding that the alert suggested the encrypted communications could "be intended to activate or provide instructions to prepositioned sleeper assets operating outside the originating country."
However, the alert also stated that there is "no operational threat tied to a specific location."
