82, back in the day when the shockster caddied at san francisco golf club during his stinson beach high school & berkeley days he NEVER picked up clubs from helicopter tossers and guess wut, he always got an apology & an extra tip from his ashamed player walking from the 18th green back to the clubhouse

Shockster - you have NEVER played in wind unless you played at Sunol - that god foresaken piece of dirt that even housing developers know it is not good for anything in a HOWLING June gale that would have sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald in the RBAL championship. I played the front 9 4 over hitting essentially stingers all day long. I saw a ball get blow BACKWARDs when a kid hit a PW into it. Good times. Thank goodness they closed that rathole down.

erik, gonna take ur word on ur funny description of sunol that it wuz a ****show but honestly from this video looks like a decent piece of property with rolling topography for a links windswept design with tight firm turf at the hands of an architect from the current golden age of minimalism

the worstest course shocky has played in the bay area is blue rock springs (which honestly isn't that bad just the greens wuz running at shag carpet speed with rainwater in all the bunkers) in vallejo which infamously wuz the site of the zodiac killer's 1st murders of a young couple making out in the parking lot back in the day...get a room, kids

LOL. Played blue rock many a time with my BHS Yellowjackets Golf Mates.

I think you COULD make Sunol work but you would have to build it for the idea of destination golf. Prairie Dunes et. al. The reason they put 400 foot high windmills on that pass (is that the wind HOWLS from the Bay to the Central Valley) through there as of an afternoon. Just not enough demand for daily fee players I think even in this post-COVID golf boom we are enjoying. And I just don't have a feel anymore for whether the Bay Area high net work folks who are not donating enough to Cal BB ;-) have better/other options.

thomas & the shockster met back in the day at a national golf digest architecture panelist rankings summit in orlando and have remained in contact thru the years...at that summit the guest speakers included my only idol in life bill coore, pete dye, arnold palmer & an architecturally clueless jack nicklaus who shocked the panelists by admitting that despite building a course at the prairie club in the middle of nowhere western nebraska that he never bothered to go next door to mullen a couple of miles to check out c&c's intergalactic sand hills which is arguably the greatest course built on planet earth in the last 100 years!!

anyways friedman tole me he will help me navigate the new york times labyrinth in ensuring there is proper coverage re: jay & jenny if their contracts are renewed past july 1, 2026...fun fact: networking is kinda important in all aspects of successful ventures including but not limited to football recruiting, playing the world's top 100 golf courses and doggy dog rescue facilities fundraising

We're having a bit of geographic confusion here. The windmills are on the Altamont pass off Interstate 580 between Livermore and Tracy. The two golf courses there are the newly redesigned Poppy Ridge, out in the vineyards south of the freeway, and Las Positas, which is next to the Livermore Airport.

Sunol is off the Sunol Grade on Interstate 680, between Fremont and Pleasanton. The two courses on that properly were actually on land leased to the operator by the City of San Francisco, which owns that area because the main pipeline from Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite to the Bay Area goes through that area. The City let the lease run out and the land go fallow because they decided it wasn't a good look to be watering a golf course with what is essentailly imported drinking water. The wind does blow there, but not as much as in the Altamont area. The nearest course to Sunol is Callippe Preserve in Pleasanton, which is also windy and quite hilly. Brian Costello of JMP designed Callippe, and did a good job, given the enviromental restrictions he had to deal with. The course is habitat for the endangered Callippe blue butterfly.

my daughter taylor reminded me recently that the 1st time in the pregame early warm ups 45 minutes in a nearly empty haas before tipoff of the season opener vs south dakota a&m that when ivan, jaylen, t-wall, the bird, kam, roger, the king, chauca, sammy, domingo, j-mat, nicky ham, cole & our boy glapion came over to our floor seats before the 1st lay up & fist bumped/hugged us that i teared up and almost had a total emotional breakdown 100% losing my ****!!

Fair. It has been a while as I complete my exile (LOL) in Low Cal.

I still though know it is a horrific windtrap. It is OK in the AM but by many an afternoon the fog is coming in and the temp differential between Livermore/Central Valleys and the Bay lead to gale force winds ;-)

That video on the dirtiest moments in AFL history was laugh out loud funny. The players never seem to expect the cheap shots that, after 60 seconds of watching the video, the viewer knows is coming. The look of surprise when the guy points out that his tooth is loose (or missing or broken) is priceless.

It also cracked me up that the only guys wearing helmets appeared to be the training/first aid crew that comes running out to tend to the wounded like rodeo clowns avoiding a raging bull...

No question about that in the Bay Area. My home course is Baylands in Palo Alto. It's well known that if you tee off at 10 a.m. or later, you're going to get a fairly screaming wind once the sun gets high. And there's no relief, since the redesign of the course in 2017 took out most of the trees.
