2026 san antonio riverwalk tournament: 3rd round update (play suspended, round will be completed tomorrow morning)


michael kim (3 under par thru 9 holes, 10 under par for the tournament, tied for 5th place): despite severe thunderstorms & his development coach (sean foley is only kim's swing coach, he's not as important as the monster) further afar back in north scottsdale, michael is still en fuego with 3 birdies (no bogeys) on his front nine & climbing the leaderboard!!

michael's highly controlled trap draw is ideal for windy weather & he's 4th in the field in hitting greens in regulation (34 outta 45, 75%+ on a very difficult course) along with his usual ELITE putting

let's keep SMILING and SAILING on a charted course to augusta national where the fairways wind up and down below and the smell of azaleas in the pines brah!!

Austin Clark is one crazy (in a good way) dude. Does this hillbilly thing - think intellectual Ed Orgeron - so well everyone just loves him. Not your normal serious Bear, but he has a great future as a coach. Knew him when he was a player. Undersized guy that just loved taking on much bigger oline guys

One day everyone will be talking about him.

So I looked at the the Golf Magazine top 100 and the US courses in particular, and while it has been a few years since the surgeons have allowed me to play, asked myself what do I object to since this is all subjective unless your golf course architect. But here it goes.

In CA, Pastatiempo and Valley Club continue to be underrated. So much golf course eye candy without having to rely in tricked-up water features, etc. That said, the ratings of LACC North (after Hanse's alterations) and Rivera once the got rid of the recent big name architect's trickery) really don't need to rely on the dramatics to have a great golf course. Hanse did a great job at Waverly as well, and I hope that fine old course makes a move up in rankings.

I would put Bandon Trails higher in the rankings. It has everything you could ask a golf course to have.

I'm not the greatest McClay Kidd fan (even though I belong to club whose course he designed), but his Nanea Golf Course in Hawaii is one of the best courses I have had the privilege to play.

alex, could not agree more with you that austin clark is one of the most passionate cali bears that evah walked thru the north tunnel of memorial stadium on gamedays (and there's zero doubt that he's a future NFL head coach in waiting)!!

back in the day shocky wuz talking to multiple bearents outside the team bus after a road victory (pro tip: as the person who got more relationships with bearents than anybody on planet earth, a real ice breaker in speaking to them is asking them with a smile on ur face is "whose your favorite player??") when he chatted with alan clark who tole me that his son wuz a kinda undersized walk on defensive lineman & that the head coach had addressed the entire team that week and tole them that if every ******* player in the program had the same relentless intensity and work ethic as austin clark the bears would be the ******* national champions

alan started to tear up telling me this and then volunteered that he wuz an air conditioning specialist in tampa and that he never went to college but that both his son austin & daughter adrienne got gpas over 4.0 which he tole me while wiping tears off his face...schulzy hugged the emotional proud dad & quietly tole him that he wuz in my humble opinion the dad of the century which made him laugh & say "thank you!!"

alex, agreed re: your architecture commentary & your spot on re: post hanse restoration work at waverley in portland which along with the public wine valley (the rustic canyon of washington) are the 2 most underrated courses in the northwest

as for nanea the uber exclusive club on maui is one of the top modern golf experiences on planet earth along with friar's head in the hamptons, ellerston in australia & shanqin bay on hainan island in china...the shockster has been a guest at nanea a half a dozen times courtesy of charles schwab (the stanford grad likes to call me his favorite "berkeley hippie" which is kinda a backhanded compliment) who loves to talk golf course architecture...the reason nanea is not better regarded in the world top 100 rankings is because of the non walkable routing which is a shame because architect david mcklay kidd (who did terrific work at rolling hills) had 10,000+ pristine acres at his disposal with zero homes to work around

michael kim (66, tied for 2nd): michael kim is a FEARLESS boss man!!

on the par 5 18th hole playing back into the fierce texas winds (which favors kim's trap draw), michael knocked his wedge into the creek fronting the green, took his penalty stroke & then without any complaining/feeling sorry for himself (which are unproductive wasted emotions, ur not a victim max) holed out from the rough for a saving par!!

wowza!!

with the potential for more thunderstorms & guys tryna get to augusta nationa tonite, michael will be teeing off for his 4th round in less than an hour (no pga tour repairing of the leaders together)

cal poly berkeley=the 9th island

DMK likes to move a lot of dirt, and his golf courses generally are difficult to walk. Rolling Hills has elevation changes, but is not a grueling walk. The view of the course among the members is polarizing, some of it owing to the course is very expensive to maintain. The course is maturing nicely and likely will be in the top 5 on LA County courses.

But at Tetherow, I could have used a Sherpa. Two of the guys I played with fell and bloodied themselves. Bandon Dunes and Huntsman are stiff walks, and the routing on the latter is brutal. I have not played Scarecrow, but I hear the routing requires cart golf play. Admittedly I played cart golf/fore caddy at Nanea, which speeds-up play and makes finding one's ball (which can be an issue) findable. That course would be tough walk, but is beautiful. .

michael kim (69, tied for 2nd, $741,533): after watching tommy fleetwood's wedge get swallowed up by the brisk headwinds plus a monster jolt of adrenaline from all the ******* excitement, kim airmailed the 18th green on his 95 yard gap wedge but then hit a 1000% filthy sand shot to secure 20+ official world golf ranking points (which are critical for securing invitations to the 2026 us & british opens) & is now ranked #43 in the world, CONGRATS brah!!

michael kim pga tour press conference:

"Look, let's be real here, my career got jump started last year at TPC Scottsdale when Shocky coached me up & then my previous best tournament this year wuz again at the Wasted Management tourney with the Monster so it's no surprise to me that my most outstanding golf of 2026 happened with the Shockster gliding in this week to San Antonio from North Scottsdale!!"

"Shocky's astute observations re: my putting pace issues in the 1st round resulted in my making the necessary SPEED adjustments and then we were OFF TO THE RACES this week on the greens!!"

I also played Winged Foot West on a brutally windy day when then rolled the greens and grew the rough for their club championship. I was told they were close to US Open standards except for the tee box. That was a round that honestly was much more about survival than enjoyment. Not in a rush to play there again soon, unlike FH and Nanea. I also played a sweet Westchester course called Fenway. Have you ever played there?

prospect, we're on the same page, the shockster recently contacted coach lup suggesting that the september 12, 2026 game with wagner be moved to ibiza primarily because there's gonna be 30,000+ empty seats at memorial stadium as a direct results of the recent failing marketing/attendance decision to once again NOT offer FREE tixs to all berkeley students which is honestly a discriminatory practice against poor as **** kids (like my tiger moms back in the day) who don't got rich parents who will buy the $125 combo pass for them

hollywood, 100% that fenway is a terrifc hidden gem that gets overshadowed by it's minutes away neighbors quaker ridge and winged foot west & east...played the course right after its renovation as a sponsored guest of architect gil hanse who did a terrific job of restoring the dramatic golden age bunkering & removing thousands of trees to open up wind corridors and dramatic vistas

anyways, my early morning sub 3 hour walking round as a first out single wuz memorable because of my fantastic greens reading caddie javier who also said some really funny ****...we're on the back nine on the ridge most further afar from the clubhouse when the shockster gotta 60 footer with multiple 10+ foot breaks...javier gives me his on the money read & then tells me with a twinkle in his eye that if i make this putt (of which the odds are approximately the same as oski evah graduating from berkeley) that "señor shocky, i promise to introduce you to my muy bonita cousin maria con su pelo negro y un muy grande ponytail!!"

so of course shocky 3 jacks for a bogey & never meets maria, ay caramba

My fellow Cal alum who's the member at Fenway and Friar's Head hosted me at Fenway last Fall. had a great time with his favorite caddy who had failing eyesight.....on the back nine, he decided to go down next to the green on a downhill Par 3. I hit my tee shot and blocked it about 20 yards right of the green and watched as the caddy looked up and watched the ball fall down and bounce off the bill of his cap. I couldn't believe that he didn't get knocked down. Very scary moment...but we had a great time. It's a Tillinghast course...

Why doesn't the Cal golf team have a decent licensing deal? I always see posts for Foot Joy, RLX, and other brands that have collegiate ties and Cal is nowhere to be seen. Super frustrating. i think we're with Peter Millar which is kinda over....Peter Millar owns GFORE which is much more fashion forward and cool. They should at least be with them...

I don't know a lot about this, but my understanding is that what college players are primarily getting is free equipment. PXG, for example, will give clubs to any college players who want to play them. I don't think the golf companies have moved yet to actually offering money to college players, because what normally drives the market is what the pros wear and play. One of the issues might be what happens if a player gets a clothing contract and wants to wear something different than what the rest of the team is wearing.

a lotta solid observations here (the shockster is a minimalist & got only 1 pair of golf shoes-navy blue gfores which he luvs), my 2 cents is that the men's golf program current endowment is LARGER than the football & hoops programs combined!!

players wanna play the equipment of their choice that maximizes their games & the bears got a lotta different brands even in one bag with clubs changed out as perceived necessary

but yeah if eleonora could negotiate a clothing deal that would be outstanding, right callixte??

shocky gotta nba organization as a client, a golf buddy with the team tole me that scottie pippen tole him that the "dead" atmosphere on gamedays wuz a factor in his son entering the transfer portal, elite athletes wanna play on the loudest/largest stages on gamedays (and not zero energy haas pavilion with a handful of sr citizens)

the excuse makers got all sorts of sorry azz explanations explaining why the hoops programs can't connect with students & alums under 30 but that ignores the fact that both the warriors and the valkyries are averaging 18,064 fans per game via effective innovative professional marketing

just read jay & jenny's bull****notes which doesn't mention the abysmal hoops attendance metrics, softball's 3-12 acc record or baseball's 1-11 acc record and instead focuses on the football program's upward trajectory which is ironic because these 2 worthless bureaucrats worked against the revenue sport programs for the last decade and are now unsuccessful tryna rebrand themselves as pro football which isn't fooling anybody

honestly right now cal hoops is just rearranging the chairs on the titanic and nothing is gonna change until the chancellor gives jay & jenny their termination papers

Even at the end of the season when the team was fighting to rise above a bubble spot, and then the 2 NIT home games the home crowd turnout was pretty mediocre. It is no surprise this is a turnoff for players and coaches. They see opposing ACC teams enjoy a very positive home environment and return home to a relatively empty Haas.
What is the likelihood that the co-AD's are out this summer? You've mentioned they have a contract renewal?
On a different subject, we have any football recruits out of the Central Valley? I was surprised to see that Edison High in Fresno has one of the highest acceptance rates for public high schools in California for % of applicants into Berkeley or UCLA.
