Ames - Definitely need to keep him. Highest quality player on the team. I'd say above average player. He probably is what he is at this point. Could we replace him? Yes. But we need like 5 Ames quality players and can we get 5? I doubt it. If he thought he can do better than Cal, I think it would be a bad sign.

Pippen - Need to keep him. I think he is an average player right now. However, he could develop into an Ames level player next year. And we don't have enough average players now.

Yeanay - let's be honest. We don't know. We don't even know if he can get on the floor regularly. He is intriguing because he massively passes the eyeball test. He is probably the one guy on the team that could be huge or do very little. Want to keep in case he is huge. Want to sign better options in case he does little..

I'd actually prefer Pippen over Ames if we had to pick one. Ames is a nice scorer, but he's limited physically. Pippen is already a very good all-around PG, with the potential to take a massive leap next season.

I think putting Kocanas and Carr in the same bucket is kind of wild. Carr showed a lot of promise as a true freshman. It's pretty likely he'll develop into a very dependable PG.

Kocanas, OTOH, has shown nothing. He is a negative in every aspect when he's on the floor.

Carr has definitely shown more and you are probably right that my putting them in the same category was too flip on my part. I think Kocanas has more upside but a lot more downside. And needs a lot more work. A lot more. I guess they are in the same bucket for me in the sense that I think they both are more than a year away from being more than end of the rotation on a successful team. 100% if I were to lay odds on who is going to be a meaningful part of the rotation either next year or in the future, Carr would be a lot higher.

Part of this is that I just no longer think it matters that much who might contribute in 2 years.

edit: For some reason, I thought Kocanas was a year younger. I guess just hard to keep track with all of the roster turnover. Forget my analysis on him above. Based on that, yeah, I agree - shouldn't be in the same breath as Carr and frankly move him into the same category as Dut.

Again, my comments on Yeanay were more about what he can possibly do as an insider player. The truth is next year we need an outside shooter to replace Camden OR Bell. Our other frontcourt guy has to give us strength and athleticism inside, something that neither Camden or Bell brought to the game.

It is also theoretically possible that Pippen could improve his outside shooting enough to at least come close to fulfilling some of that role. I think he is still early in his development cycle. But I'm hoping we bring in 2 proven outside shooters.

I'm not trying to imply Petraitis is an awesome scorer - as I said, he is an average player. But when he has been healthy in his career he has been a competent scorer. As I said, a solid piece on an as yet not good scoring team. If he's a top scorer, we are in trouble. If he comes off the bench and scores in a supporting role, that is useful. For next year, he'd provide a much more competent level of scoring than Carr, in my opinion.

re: Carr -

A couple of my brothers flew into town and we went to the St. Joes game. There was a number of times where Carr was out hustling everyone on the court and so many of our running comments on game play involved Carr busting his hump to keep plays alive, or grab a rebound or loose ball, and getting hands into the passing lanes. With what he showed us the other night, there is a place on this team for him and I love the idea of him coming off the bench and just turning on the heat. One of my brothers said, "damn I hadn't realized he is such a pest."

I am in the camp that Pippen is right on the cusp of being really good. I hope he stays.

Dai Dai at times was completely unguardable vs St Joes to the point where more than once Madsen yelled at the team to basically clear out and all 4 would move to the baseline and Dai Dai would abuse his defender. I really thought he was gonna get a bucket when we most needed it, to seal the deal, but...

Oh sorry, perhaps the rest of my thoughts should be in a different thread so I'll stop here. At least I was addressing guys I'd like to keep.

Carr is a great passer, but to your point I was amazed when he dived on the floor to save the ball from going out of bounds. How he was able to get the ball to Pippin on that play was pure hustle and magic

If he can just improve his .257 3P%. Tough to not have that given his height and body type.

Absolutely agree. I can't tell if his shooting form is part of the issue but it doesn't look broken

hopefully working with a shooting coach and putting up a ton of shots will improve that to the low 30s

And needs a lot more work. A lot more. I guess they are in the same bucket for me in the sense that I think they both are more than a year away from being more than end of the rotation on a successful team. 100% if I were to lay odds on who is going to be a meaningful part of the rotation either next year or in the future, Carr would be a lot higher.

Part of this is that I just no longer think it matters that much who might contribute in 2 years.

edit: For some reason, I thought Kocanas was a year younger. I guess just hard to keep track with all of the roster turnover. Forget my analysis on him above. Based on that, yeah, I agree - shouldn't be in the same breath as Carr and frankly move him into the same category as Dut.

re: Carr -

A couple of my brothers flew into town and we went to the St. Joes game. There was a number of times where Carr was out hustling everyone on the court and so many of our running comments on game play involved Carr busting his hump to keep plays alive, or grab a rebound or loose ball, and getting hands into the passing lanes. With what he showed us the other night, there is a place on this team for him and I love the idea of him coming off the bench and just turning on the heat. One of my brothers said, "damn I hadn't realized he is such a pest."

I am in the camp that Pippen is right on the cusp of being really good. I hope he stays.

Dai Dai at times was completely unguardable vs St Joes to the point where more than once Madsen yelled at the team to basically clear out and all 4 would move to the baseline and Dai Dai would abuse his defender. I really thought he was gonna get a bucket when we most needed it, to seal the deal, but...

Oh sorry, perhaps the rest of my thoughts should be in a different thread so I'll stop here. At least I was addressing guys I'd like to keep.

Carr is a great passer, but to your point I was amazed when he dived on the floor to save the ball from going out of bounds. How he was able to get the ball to Pippin on that play was pure hustle and magic

he also has a high hoops IQ. hope he stays

I think it's because he didn't want to get blocked, he had been blocked quite a few times in conference due to his flat jump shot mixed with already being pretty short.

Are there no early portal rumors out there? I don't follow X feeds and portal bloggers, but I know many others do.
I do not expect 2/3 of the names in the OP to be there in three months, but I do hope we retain Pippen and Dai Dai.

Nothing other than TT and Dai Dai saying they will likely stay.

It was announced that Carr is staying.

Dai Dai is far from a sure thing. Minutes after the St. Joe's loss, he said he "believed" that he "should" be at Cal next season. That's far from being a definitive statement of intent.

Def not definitive but it's better than nothing.

I wouldn't trust any of their quotes till AFTER the offers come in from other programs. And those offers aren't going to come till players considering entering the draft make their decisions. And yes tampering happens.

Maybe it is a groundbreaking challenge to the 4 year rule? Maybe not all of his Syracuse credits transferred and he is still working on his Cal degree. Argument would be the NCAA is illegally and arbitrarily restricting his abilty to earn scholarship and NIL money?

Aren't we still awaiting a ruling on Jacob DeJesus's eligibility with respect to his JuCo seasons counting or not?
