And what's your answer to Lola?

Would have to ask her. But must think that she can be a starter someplace else.

For those with closer connections to the team, are there any shoes that we are worried about dropping? Or is Lola maybe the big one?

Lola was good on defense with only a rare turnover but was poor on offense with a few rare 3 pointers made. Why can't we get enough players who can both score and defend? Is it because those are rarer to come by and when they do show up- they go to the top BB schools so we have to settle for the players who can do only one or the other??

Given how many unhappy players have entered the portal nationwide, I would think that many feel that they should be starters. Charmin was able to promise that to Sakima and Mjracle, and not sure what was offered to Naya. So, with no further departures, the starters will be Lulu, Taylor, Gisella and two portal players? Or Zara? Naya? The Greek might be redshirted.

If any of these players change their mind about the portal on their own or through the encouragement of the coaching staff, there are procedures to follow in order to withdraw. Keep that in mind.

I agree. I liked Lola's defense especially.

The big ones I hope stay:
Lulu, Naya, Gisella, Mjracle, Taylor, not in any particular order after Lulu.

I hope those players stay too

I just saw Tennessee has ZERO players for next year. I mean seriously, what is even the point of "college" sports any more?

There's got to be some type of regulation or boundaries.

thanks, confirmed..

We had a lot of guards on the roster this season. Maybe they all wanted to start. Maybe they all wanted starter money. If so there's nothing we can do. Maybe some were unhappy with the program or the university or the town or something. If so that's sad but that's life.

The one I would most like to have kept is Grace. She has a wide variety of skills and plenty of time for development.

Why wonder some schools have stopped doing HS recruits. What's the point when they are just gonna transfer anyway?

Or maybe it's just part of being a McCallop.

Doing some investigating, I found that her older sister (Emajin McCallop) who also plays college basketball (guard) is a redshirt-junior at Truman State University (Missouri). This is her third school. First, it was Alabama A&M, then Washburn University.

Watching the MBB National Championship game tonight (Michigan v. UConn).
Announcer said that all 5 starters for Michigan are transfers.

New day and age for both WBB and MBB.

NIL and the unchecked transfers have ruined college sports. Why invest in rooting for a player who may leave at any moment and does not feel loyalty to your school. I think this all goes back to the greed of coaches and NCAA. If they had kept their pay and loyalty in order, players wouldn't have felt ripped off.

I'm a UCLA grad, and not nearly as true as I am to Cal. But I take your point. And I detest this system.

How upside down is it that the NFL and NBA are MORE regulated than college sports? In the pros we have caps on each team, and a pay scale, and contracts. In college we have behind closed doors payments that are not even binding.

Why do we not have a set of rules for colleges?

How about a salary cap for each school (that incudes the coaches)--with a HUGE cost to the player and coach and school if it is violated (forfeit money, victories and a ban for the player, coach, and team)?

How about formal contract that are public with a minimum of 2 year commitment to a school?

How about graduated pay scale where first year players get a set amount, and there is a minimum and maximum for each successive year after that?

The real problem (I believe) is not anti-trust law, etc. It is that coaches, ADs, NCAA execs, agents, and bowl executives want to be able to make as much as they can and so they don't want to regulate players because it might call into question the lack of regulating themselves.

Exactly this. I'm all for people having a good income but it's always bothered me that so many people make obscene amounts of money off college sports, especially commissioners, NCAA execs and the like. Coaches salaries are ridiculous too but at least they're on campus working with students. The whole system needs to be gutted and rebuilt from the ground up. Look what's happened with the craziness of huge conferences that include a team with a view of the Pacific Ocean playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Big time college sports is an unregulated mess designed to line the pockets of fat cats. (End of sermon.)

So, 3 of 4 freshmen are in the portal. (assuming Barnes stays....)
The one returning sophomore is in the portal.

Is this just WBB - or is there an issue with Coach Smith's recruiting and coaching to keep recruited players?

Or is it "unreasonable" expectation levels on the part of the players particularly now that they are at the college level?

What more could Coach Smith have given Puff Morris in her first year? Starting position not good enough on day one?

Where did Lola see herself on this team after two seasons?

Consider this (source, Talia Goodman, On3):

*67 of the top 100 players from 2022 have either transferred at least once, or are in the portal now.

* P5 programs with 7 or more players in the portal now:
Miami
Pitt
Syracuse
Butler
DePaul
Xavier
Arizona
Iowa State
Oklahoma State
UCF
Penn State
Purdue
Alabama
Arkansas
Florida
Georgia
Tennessee

NFL and NBA have collective bargaining agreements with players' unions. Rules like a salary cap, luxury tax, contracts that have to fit within league guidelines, etc., are contained within those collective bargaining agreements between the league and the players' union.

College sports doesn't have this because many states are controlled by anti-union politicians who would sooner abolish college sports than permit their public universities to have unionized athletes.

Was just now checking the board and thinking about Puff. Mere speculation but perhaps she also disliked Berkeley itself, which is not as pleasant and livable as 20 years ago.

I was fine with living in Berkeley in the late '60s and early '70s and I'm sure it's more livable now. But that's just the opinion of someone who grew up in a terminally boring suburb.

Stu, how can you say that about Lafayette in the early '60s? OK, I do remember running a front-page story on the school paper about night life in Lafayette -- and we ran a black, blank picture.

There were drag races on Deer Hill Road, the Breakfast Club with plenty of beer, and, well, El Charro once in a while.

Oh, and don't forget Chess Club.

How much of Berkeley is a Cal freshman experiencing, especially one who is a D-1 athlete? I don't live there, but aren't the culinary choices better than they were 20 years ago?

I remember talking to a serious D1 player -- it might have been Sabrina -- and asking "What do you think of Eugene (or wherever)?" And the reply was "I don't know. All I do is go to class, work out and practice."

And now with on-line classes, there's no need to even spend much time on campus.

Exactly. Though, when I was there (long time ago) it was a D-1 All American/one of the best water polo players in the world who turned me and some friends on to a tremendous BBQ place on San Pablo!
But I do think the ask of the athletes now is greater...
But also, I'm not throwing Bearblint's comment out with the bath water. She might not have liked being there, be it academics, homesickness, or any combination of other factors. Then again, in this new era, was it simply leaving for more money?

l've long suspected that the area is not important to college athletes. How else do you explain them flocking to places like Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi when they could enjoy the temperate climes of the Bay Area with all its cultural offerings and access to other destinations such as Tahoe, Santa Cruz and Yosemite? Athletes will freeze in Wisconsin in January and roast in Georgia in August if the team, facilities, coaches are to their liking. I also think the promise of a UC Berkeley degree doesn't matter to that many student athletes.

I don't think we can dismiss proximity to home, but, considering the technical abilities that have advanced over the years, it's easier to stay in touch, vs. me calling my parents every Sunday morning, just to keep the phone bill sane.

I also think weather is less of a factor for kids of this age. And for some of us as well.

I noticed the late 1960's never reached Lafayette. To this day.

Puff was in Blackwell Hall the most sought after dorm. Grace was her roommate. I talked to Grace for about 30 minutes and Puff for 10 minutes at one of the dinners earlier in the year and they both seem pretty happy with Berkeley.

I've been wondering if it would be better to pair each freshie with an experienced player. One advantage is the older player could be a mentor. Another is the feelings of one disgruntled freshie wouldn't be communicated so readily to another freshie.

Puff Morris to Arizona. Just posted on Instagram.

Playing time shouldn't be an issue. Arizona has 8 players in the portal.
