And what's your answer to Lola?
Would have to ask her. But must think that she can be a starter someplace else.

I agree. I liked Lola's defense especially.
The big ones I hope stay:
Lulu, Naya, Gisella, Mjracle, Taylor, not in any particular order after Lulu.

I just saw Tennessee has ZERO players for next year. I mean seriously, what is even the point of "college" sports any more?
There's got to be some type of regulation or boundaries.

We had a lot of guards on the roster this season. Maybe they all wanted to start. Maybe they all wanted starter money. If so there's nothing we can do. Maybe some were unhappy with the program or the university or the town or something. If so that's sad but that's life.
The one I would most like to have kept is Grace. She has a wide variety of skills and plenty of time for development.

Given how many unhappy players have entered the portal nationwide, I would think that many feel that they should be starters. Charmin was able to promise that to Sakima and Mjracle, and not sure what was offered to Naya. So, with no further departures, the starters will be Lulu, Taylor, Gisella and two portal players? Or Zara? Naya? The Greek might be redshirted.

The real problem (I believe) is not anti-trust law, etc. It is that coaches, ADs, NCAA execs, agents, and bowl executives want to be able to make as much as they can and so they don't want to regulate players because it might call into question the lack of regulating themselves.

So, 3 of 4 freshmen are in the portal. (assuming Barnes stays....)
The one returning sophomore is in the portal.
Is this just WBB - or is there an issue with Coach Smith's recruiting and coaching to keep recruited players?

How upside down is it that the NFL and NBA are MORE regulated than college sports? In the pros we have caps on each team, and a pay scale, and contracts. In college we have behind closed doors payments that are not even binding.
Why do we not have a set of rules for colleges?

Was just now checking the board and thinking about Puff. Mere speculation but perhaps she also disliked Berkeley itself, which is not as pleasant and livable as 20 years ago.

How much of Berkeley is a Cal freshman experiencing, especially one who is a D-1 athlete? I don't live there, but aren't the culinary choices better than they were 20 years ago?

I remember talking to a serious D1 player -- it might have been Sabrina -- and asking "What do you think of Eugene (or wherever)?" And the reply was "I don't know. All I do is go to class, work out and practice."
And now with on-line classes, there's no need to even spend much time on campus.

l've long suspected that the area is not important to college athletes. How else do you explain them flocking to places like Alabama, Kansas and Mississippi when they could enjoy the temperate climes of the Bay Area with all its cultural offerings and access to other destinations such as Tahoe, Santa Cruz and Yosemite? Athletes will freeze in Wisconsin in January and roast in Georgia in August if the team, facilities, coaches are to their liking. I also think the promise of a UC Berkeley degree doesn't matter to that many student athletes.

Stu, how can you say that about Lafayette in the early '60s? OK, I do remember running a front-page story on the school paper about night life in Lafayette -- and we ran a black, blank picture.
There were drag races on Deer Hill Road, the Breakfast Club with plenty of beer, and, well, El Charro once in a while.
Oh, and don't forget Chess Club.

Puff was in Blackwell Hall the most sought after dorm. Grace was her roommate. I talked to Grace for about 30 minutes and Puff for 10 minutes at one of the dinners earlier in the year and they both seem pretty happy with Berkeley.
