Minnesota, particularly the Minneapolis area, has been at the center of several high-profile fraud cases involving federal and state social service programs during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Estimates of total fraud across related schemes vary, but official figures point to at least $250-300 million in the flagship case, with broader probes suggesting up to $1 billion or more in combined losses from multiple programs like child nutrition, Medicaid, and autism services.

Tim Walz's administration has been heavily criticized for failing to prevent the fraud, with whistleblowers alleging that state officials knew about red flags as early as 2020 but retaliated against those who raised concerns.

Ilhan Omar received campaign donations from individuals later implicated in the fraud, held her 2018 victory party at a restaurant owned by a convicted fraudster, and featured in ads for related nonprofits. Whistleblowers allege she and other officials looked the other way.

You people are still after Walz as if he were still some kind of threat. The dude's ascendancy was over after JD Vance got the best of him in the VP debate last year. Heck, I had a man crush on Walz until he totally blew that one question. Now, I can only remember who he is when you keep bringing him up

If I were you, I'd focus my attentions elsewhere. You're welcome.

So we should just ignore the fraud because Walz' political career is dead?

But you're right, JD crushed him

I don't know for sure, but I got the impression Minnesota was being singled out to take a shot at Walz. Isn't there crap like this going on in most states?

JD Vance is super-bright and very articulate. I have been following his career closely. I have even been to -- and know people in -- Middletown, Ohio. He kind of scares me the way he morphed himself into a Trump acolyte to boost his career. What does he really think about things? Maybe we will find out in three years.

Any Democrat should be very nervous going up against Vance in a debate situation. He's very good in those and very good in interviews where the interviewer is almost always hostile. Democrats are never good in those situations because the media always fawns over them and never asks them tough questions.

But Vance is scary in that I don't think anyone truly knows what he actually believes in. I think he'll happily change a stance for the highest bidder and he's more competent than Trump, who fails to do more damage than he would otherwise because his follow-through is rather lax.

I think more so Minnesota is being singled out because of immigrants, legal and illegal, abusing the system so openly. Some are gonna label that racist but I'd feel the same way if a bunch of Irish and Scottish immigrants were blatantly abusing our welfare systems. The fact that Walz is the governor may have brought it to light but, for me at least, it's not because of Walz that I care.

JD is a phenomenal orator and he's incredibly smart. He's also funny. Now that may be subjective, I'm sure most on the left don't find him humorous but they would if he was a Dem. If JD isn't the Republican candidate next election, I'll be surprised.

But Tim Walz wasn't targeted by the Trump administration. The Minnesota fraud story went viral due to a single independent journalist, Nick Shirely, with an X account, who visited a daycare center in Minnesota with no children.

Vance is a strong orator, but I'm not convinced he's incredibly smart. I don't think the guy is dumb, and he's certainly adept at cultivating the right people for his own benefit (Peter Theil, Trump), but if you didn't know his Ivy League law degree, you'd think he went to any major public university, which he did at TOSU. We don't really know anything about his policy positions because all he's said is, "I'm with Trump", which simply recognizes the way the wind is blowing in the Republican party. For example, his attitude that Europe doesn't matter to the USA reveals a complete misunderstanding of what led up to WWII.

Minus serving in the Marine Corp his life has a lot of parallels to my own, and I'm drawn to him because of it.

Lots of people here are dumb enough to believe that if Nick Shirley shows up with a crew of guys that childcare centers should just open their doors to them. If my kid was at a childcare center that opened their doors for an unknown group of guys I'd pull my kids immediately and maybe contact authorities.

But part of the way white supremacy works is the belief that all poc have to obey all white people. Now that Nick Shirley has been proven to be a fool will the magats here apologize for their bigotry and false accusations? Not likely.

Vance is a smart dude, but IMO he simply lacks charisma and that's why he has to attach himself like a barnacle to a guy like Trump in order to have success. He won in Ohio but he underperformed other Republicans while doing so.

He's good in a debate setting, yes, though a lot of that was also Walz taking (presumably because he was counseled to do so) entirely the wrong approach with it.

On this Minnesota daycare fraud thing . . . correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't there already several cases being prosecuted before the right-wing YouTubers showed up with their cameras? (Yes, even when Joe Biden was president.)

It's a real issue but the focus on it feels manufactured to me.

Well, that's part of my point. It seems like the scale is being inflated by these influencers.
