Props to Sluggo for calling out France's Dembele, 2025 Ballon d'Or winner, as a player to watch.
First half hat trick today says HELLO.

Olise is the man to watch on this French team, he has been the real revelation so far on this team. Dembele is very good, but we knew that already.

France has shined when there is a great playmaker, Platini, Zidane, and now Michael Olise is running the show distributing assists. He reminds me a bit of former midfielder Jean Tigana.

Maybe I misattributed the props on the French. Apologies.
Good luck. They certainly seem to be the frontrunner!!! But as I say, soccer has two teams, 1 ref, and Chance.

Belgium in the round of 16? We are not the favorites, for sure. I hate the conversation with my non-soccer watching friends that the US never gets better, as this team is the best it has ever been. So the time is now to beat them. Somehow. Other than the obvious move of starting Gio Reyna over Tyler Adams, which won't happen, I just don't see how.

https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/belgium-potential-usmnt-clash-in-world-cup-round-of-16/

I was hoping for Egypt, since they feel more beatable, but with the familiar aging big names of Belgium that would be be a satisfying win. They are 9th ranked.
It also would not be shameful to lose, as a Bosnia (or Egypt) loss would be.

I put the turkey game back on. Weah hot beat by Guler in the build up to their first goal and then gave up on Guler's run.

I think Weah won't play again unless there are injuries/cards.

He used to provide a positive spark with his speed and strong right foot, but all I've seen lately is him get beat and have a bad temper, risking unnecessary card discipline.

His touch was be er good. I don't trust him anymore.

He used to be helpful but we have moved past him. Next we need an upgrade on Adams. Then Dest. We have the teenagers.

They never showed a replay of the first corner of the game. Weston had what appeared to be an easy nip at the front post on the low cross, but he tried a cute back heel and whiffed. Terrible shame.

The ball continued across the face of goal(!) and turned into a corner on other side, which became Trusty's moment of glory!

I believe Iran will advance with a loss by any of Congo (unlikely) or Croatia or Algeria. The last two are both very possible. With what they've gone through in this tournament, I'll be rooting for Iran to advance.

I think Dest might be my favorite player.
He and Pulisic are like the only dudes who can face a defender up and go past him.

Speaking of which…. You must have missed Doku last night while you slept. The announcer here pointed out how he has the rare ability to stand a defender upright at a standstill, then jitter and go around either side with a burst. And the man did it over and over and over again. It was uncanny, amazing. I covet a few of those on our squad. I gotta read about him. We have those guys in America, they just play football or basketball.

I record every game but am bored by the first round where everyone advances. Except the US games.

Zavier Gozo has some of the qualities you would like. He should be on the team. There are others. The US is producing lots of wingers because it is the easiest position mentally. We need more defenders.

He is very good. He started some for Barcelona. But when you compare him to Vini, Dembele, Diaz, Saka, even Pulisic, etc., he is not good enough. Too short, too slow, has tricks but they do not come off enough. Nice left foot. He is a level up from Weah, whose job he took because Freeman took his job, but we will go up another level by 2030. I guarantee it.

For me, it's different when it's for their country. The stakes are higher than any league trophy can provide.

For me- a casual fan- it's great because all of today's matches still mean something to a lot of countries. Plus, it's not inconceivable that the US - before the
matches began- could've been one of those countries sneaking through.

Iran advances if just one of these happen:

-No tie in Algeria-Austria (keep in mind that both of these countries would advance with a tie...)
-Congo doesn't beat Uzbekistan
-Croatia loses to Ghana

The winner of Algeria-Austria gets Spain, loser eliminated, but in case if a tie Austria would play Spain and Algeria gets Belgium... Some interesting game theory dynamics in that geme.

Korea is out mainly if one of the events above happen.

Wimbledon begins with 128 players, and it is the greatest tennis tournament. Yes, the matches don't get exciting until the round of 32, but that doesn't take away from the overall tournament. People just don't tune in as much until later rounds.

The games in the knockout stages are going to be much more "closed" and defensive-minded as a loss results in elimination, while in group stage teams often go all out as the rewards from a win exceed the fear of a loss.

Basically most of the minnows are going to clog the midfield and/or park the bus and play the counter or hope for penalty shootouts.

That's not relevant to our discussion. You are diminishing a tournament because the early rounds aren't exciting. This is true for almost any major tournament, at least ones that involve a potential pool greater than 50.

Antonee Jedi Robinson ability to overlap with speed, and also run down any other wingers on his side is huge.

I like Dest also up the field more than on D, that's where USA puts pressure on opponents, in attack.

I worry about Tim Ream's speed. He could easily get run past. Fortunately, he reads the game well, and passes out if the back well. Experience over athleticism.

It will be interesting to see how Freeman develops in years ahead. He's the youngest player on this roster and is new to the squad.

I am not sure how that is relevant. The first round used to be great. One loss and a team was on the edge. Was it the last two cups that Germany went out in the first round? And the groups were much stronger with 32. Now you know everyone good will go through. Zzz.
