SHOOT OUT!

Paraguay outshot 21 - 7
And only had possession 25% of the time.
But a 1 - 1 draw after 122 minutes.

One thing is for certain - only a great team could beat Paraguay

Hard to understand having a central defender who has played 120 minutes shoot sixth. Tah is an amazing player but that is not his job. I won't miss the Germans, still bitter about 2002.

No joy in Dusseldorf, ecstasy in Asuncion.

Paraguay is now going to enter every game thinking they can win on PKs. They will park the bus against their likely opponent France, but France matches up well with Paraguay, 2-0 / 3-1 / 3-0.

Germany isn't what it used to be, missing 3 out of 6 PKs must have been their worst performance at that in the WC or Euro.

This is what makes sports great. Germany could have won that game on numerous occasions but in the end Paraguay persevered, was the better team under pressure and with a better goal keeper.

High drama in Monterrey. The Dutch better win in OT, I think Morocco wins the shootout.

Whoever gets through is going to take Canada to the woodshed.

There's going to be a shootout in Monterrey, and the Cartel is not even in it.

Kind of surprised to see Netherlands kind of playing for the draw and the shootout? Not much urgency from them. They deserved to go out.

There were a lot of blanks in that shootout. Fortunately for Morocco, they had one less than the Netherlands.

I continue to think there must be a better way to handle these tiebreaks than the terrible penalty kicks, but I guess if no one has figured it out by now then there isn't.

Like in hockey start removing players.

Come on, they play a full additional 1/3 of a game before PKs. Do you want NBA overtimes to be 16 minutes?

How about 60 minutes of overtime but sudden death and no limit on substitutions (except once you go out you can't go back in). Then PK. That would reward deeper teams.

Why change anything? It's both drama and performance under pressure

Because the game should be won using major elements of the game, not an obscure element that does not happen in most games. Both teams lose in a shootout, one team just a little more.

Teams that go through 60min of OT would be at a significant disadvantage for the next stage vs a well-rested team. That however might work for the final.

The penalties are fine, the stronger team mentally wins. Similar to shooting FTs in the final minute of a close playoff game. Also favors the underdogs usually.

Scoring and goaltending are not obscure. These are
major skills and penalties also lend themselves to strategy and practice, they aren't random. The most compelling thing is the ability to perform under pressure, again something that separates champions from
Journeymen.

That is funny.

While some players are past their primes, they quality of attackers at this World Cup will never be repeated. Including (not in order):
1. Messi
2. Ronaldo
3. Modric
4. Neymar
5. Vini Jr.
6. Haaland
7. Diaz
8. Salah
9. Mane
10. Kane
11. Saka
12. Mbappe
13. Dembele
14. Olise
15. Doue
16. Yamal
17. Pedri
18. Nico Williams
19. Doku
20. DeBruyne

Of all the active attackers of the last 20 years, it is nearly everyone. Lewandoski is an exception.

Paraguay giving Germany all they can handle! 1-1 in extra time.

On one hand I think overruling the German goal was ridiculous as there was little contact. On the other hand I think there should be a rule change to take away messing with the goalkeeper.

I texted my co-coach from kids soccer that the Pleasant Hill coach (who became our friend) thinks it was NOT a foul, but of course I did - because he used to instruct his players to obstruct our keepers on corners.
Foul!

I like PK and i think anarchistbear has it right. But in my proposal the disadvantage for the next game is a feature, not a bug. Like winning early and having your best pitcher rested.

Completely different from FT at the end of a basketball game. The endless fouling and FT at the end is part of why I stopped watching college basketball.

And that's why it's the best world cup ever. Not just their presence but the flurry did goals they scored those first games was incredible.

However, an argument could be made that the global soccer game is only expanding. Pro league is USA is drawing more talent and creating more along the way. Saudi Arabia is as well, and I don't know what's happening in other countries but you can bet on it.

They will expand to 64 teams, which means everyone (Lewandowski) always gets in and more unbalanced scores in the opening matches, the career scoring records which are now being topped will be topped again some day.

I agree with you, but I offer a wrinkle.
As my aging uncle said when I called him recently, "it just keeps getting better, doesn't it?"

That would make for interesting depth and sub strategies.
You'd have specialists who were simply runners. Like with anything, it would skew oddly - could be good, could be bad.

I do fancy watching men bonk from exhaustion. Tour de France mountain climbs - ever see a guy bonk and suddenly lose by 30 minutes?

Which brings to minds, how much PEDs is in this sport? I read that there is random testing, but how come we NEVER hear of anyone getting caught?

Like, the NFL, nobody, wants to canabalize their sport the way the MLB did.
Cheaters cheat. Look what happened to the Astros. Hush, shush. Look the other way.

There's too much at stake to think people aren't out there cheating right now.

FIFA is all for rigging results.

Does Germany suffer from the same thing England does? The need to manufacture pretty, well constructed goals. Maintain possession and pass it around the horn, never taking chances because then you might have to risk a turnover, which means more running and possibly getting scored upon.

I felt Germany had nobody dangerously quick who could win a 1v1. They over relied on crosses into traffic.

They should add a penalty shootout at the start to every game to determine who wins in a tie after 120 minutes.
Hahaha. Make all 11 starters take a kick.

Or, have 5 guys take a kick, hold the score until 6 more go after 120 minutes.
That would be hilarious.
