Facebook, Jeff Woodward: "Iran produces approximately 3.2 million barrels per day and consumes roughly 1.7 million domestically. The remaining 1.5 million barrels per day must be exported or stored. Iran's onshore storage capacity is 50 to 55 million barrels, currently about 60 percent full. That leaves approximately 20 million barrels of spare capacity. At 1.5 million barrels per day of surplus, the tanks fill in 13 days. Around April 27, Iran must begin shutting in wells.

"Shutting in mature Iranian oil wells is not like turning off a faucet. Iran's dominant formations, the Asmari and Bangestan carbonates in Khuzestan, are fractured water-drive reservoirs where decades of production created a delicate equilibrium. When you shut a well, water cones upward through fracture networks and invades the production zone. When you restart, the well produces water instead of oil. FDD and Rabobank estimate 300,000 to 500,000 barrels per day of permanent, irrecoverable loss from prolonged shut-ins. SPE studies document asphaltene precipitation causing 23 to 65 percent permeability reduction. The blockade does not just stop exports. It kills the wells that produce them."
