As for a prolonged war, the Chinese smartly don't fight wars that are not near their borders. Russia has its own problems. What military force do you see preventing Iran from being bombed into the stone age over the next few months? The US' capacity to quickly level areas with conventional weapons is way far beyond what Israel did to Gaza. Your son has nothing to worry about if the Mullah's don't come around quickly. The Iranian military will just take over the county rather than get decimated.

Edit: while the concept of a long military action seems unfounded, there are conceivably some legitimate concerns related to consequences from this US military action. I don't know what the government knew about Iran, but I have major reservations being the world policeman.

Second edit: France, Italy and Great Britain now offering to help bomb Iran. Has the family considered Greenland maybe?

We have relatives in Switzerland which has mandatory service. Most men serve in the military but not all. Our relative was choosing not to go the military route though i encouraged him to. I told him I thought serving in the Swiss military could be a good experience for him and I told him I would not say that about the US military because you don't know where you'd wind up killing people.

I wish my son had the opportunity to serve in something like the Swiss military as it would do him good. I think I could say the same about most of the miliaries in Western Europe. Not the US military.
